20 gauge slugs for Russian Wild Boar: Yes or no?
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:16:55 AM »
There is a hunting preserve near me. They have Russian Wild Boar to hunt. Is a 20 guage loaded with slugs enough to hunt them?

Thanks,

I wouldn't hesitate to use the 20ga dixie slugs. I plan to use them on black bear.

What kind of slugs are you planning on using. I'd recommend staying away from the more fragile desighns. Go with in about any of the foster types in a smooth bore. Or in the sabot/rifled barrel I'd try buckhammers or some of the Winchester supremes. Shot placement is the most important as always though. Good luck and post some pics.

It's a smoothbore barrel, so I think the rifled slugs would not work too well. Still planning the trip. Thinking of going sometime next Fall. Thery also have Elk, Ram and Bison to hunt.  Not too sure about a 20 gauge and Bison.

Try the old style brenekkes if you can find them. they are not a hollow point design asnd pentrate well. More important find a slug that shoots well out of your gun.

Thanks,

Coyote Trapper, I live in some of the best feral hog hunting in Tx. unless you talk to the farmers and ranchers and they think it's the worst, because of the damage the hogs do. The last two I killed weighed about 350 and the other about 375. The last I killed with an AR15 shooting a 52 grain match hollow point. What I'm saying is that people like me who grew up in hog country realize their hard to kill reputation is a myth. My grandfather killed them with a 22. Your 20 guage is way more than enough shootin slugs of about any kind, with  good shot placement.
With that said let me clarify one thing. I don't want in the thick brush with a mad boar, and worse yet, a sow with pigs. I have seen them kill pitbull catch dogs (good riddance) , mountain curs, and others. A friend of my got cut up last year, by gettin too close. With that point made, I also have some friends that kill them with bowie knifes, while the dogs hold em. Now, that is crazy. ;)
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

elk/ram and bison are  cleanly killed all the time with a 54cal muzzler loader  and a patched round ball. the 20 gage slug  sure has a lot more get up and go   .so think shot placement  and have a good  hunt
never to much gun

My model 670 Express with Remington rifled barrel really zaps the hogs when fed the old 3/4 ounce Copper Solid ammo.  BEWARE:  This is the ammo that supposedly ruined those Hastings rifled barrels.  It does not hurt the Remington rifled barrel at all.  Picked up a bunch of this ammo at a Wal Mart in Elkins, WV a few years ago for $5.00 per box.

Like the others said, "Shot placement is the key!"  It should be fine as long as you don't try off angle shots.  I saw a 600+ lber take 3 shots from a 12 ga. with foster-type slugs before he went down.  The first 2 hit on the shoulder and were stopped by the gristle plate.  The last shot hit behind the shoulder angling forward and did the job.  Just be careful where you shoot and you'll be fine.

The part of the state that our hunting camp is in is a "shotgun only" area. I'm going to use my 11-87 20 ga. with a fully rifled barrel and sabot slugs. Anyway's we're always talking and reading up on guns, ammo and everything else that gets talked about at hunting camp! One of the guys bought a book about using a shotgun for deer. In the book they talk about the 20 ga. in great length. The author of the book shot two wild boar that weighed over 400 lbs. with a 20 ga. (rifled barrel and I believe Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs). Both were shot at just over 100 yards, killed very quickly. One run 5 yards or so the other ran about 20 yards. As already mentioned, shot placement is the most important thing. Good luck!
