Anybody have a milsurp that defies all logic??
« on: December 15, 2006, 03:31:03 PM »
Check out this complete freak of nature. I own almost 20 centire fire rifles new and old bolt actions from 106 yrs old to brand new 22 hornet to 300WBY................ AND YET my frankenrifle put togeather from parts out shoots most of them with astounding groups on a REGULAR basis. Pictured below are the ONLY five groups i've fired with this load. 8lb trigger and all.

I bought this MAS 36 from a local shop a few years back, unaware at the time the craptastic level of workmanship the goons at Century exibited when converting this rifle to 308 win.

So since the rifle was already completely screwed up I've had some fun with it playing around with some DIY bubba style gunsmithing. First off I had to fashon a new forend retaining clip from an old motorbike masterlink. Then I managed to e-bay a Golden State arms carbine barrel in the original 7.5x54 cartrige. Next came the cobble togeather scope mount held in place with some machine screws from a junk outboard motor that sports a Bushnell Banner shotgun scope. Lastly I full length bedded the forend to the barrel using some Quicksteel from a local auto parts house.

You would think a bubbification such as this would shoot like crap and yet is shoots groups like the ones pictured above. It shoots other bullets almost as well provided that they are short and have lots of bearing surface.

Mabye one day I'll get lucky and be able to hustle sombody at the range with this rifle

Definately a sleeper. I bet it wouldn't be the first time a guy with a $2,000 rifle got outshot by someone like you. I used to see the same thing playing in bands, the guy with the beat up old les paul usually blew away the guy with the new espensive equipment. I like the amount of good old american ingenuity that went into your rifle.

Thats cool to see. congrats on your Bubba gun.   I have heard 6.5 Arisakas can be a real tackdriver but don't have personal experiance.

I have a type 99 sporter chambered for 7.7x58 Japanese, It shoots rather well. I don't see why a type 38 wouldn't shoot just as well if not better

I've got a Type 38 Arisaka carbine, made in the Manchurian arsenal at Mukden. It has a serial number higher than those listed. It's been made up out of parts, and has a trigger pull that can't be measured on my fish scale. The action's so sticky, its best to load it by hand, skippin' the magazine. It has the barrel mounted peep that needs a lot of light, and someone put a partridge style front blade from a Swedish Model 96 on it, eliminateing the ears normal to this rifle. From the bench it'll outshoot my scoped Savage 110. I had a couple of fellahs at the range one day pack up and spray gravel all over me, after glassin' my first target.  ;D

My dear Brother-in-law bought a bubba'd 6.5 Swede for the action.  He peeled the camo tape off and looked at the barrel.  Had to see if all the pits would keep shots on a piece of paper at 25 yards.  The barrel is terrible.  The same barrel shoots <0.5" groups at 100 yards all day long with a 4x Weaver.  The rifle shot so well, he decided to leave it as is.  Yes, he has won some money so it has paid for itself.

Myself, on the other hand, have been fighting a 7.65 Argie.  Finally got less than 4 inch groups using 123 gr bullets.  Finally.

I love this hobby!  But I shore do miss my mind.

My No4 MK2 with reloads is shooting sub 3 inch groups at 200 yards! 2 of the shots in each group are consistently an inch or less. I've done nothing to her except clean her.BTW these groups are with the issue sights. Right now her best load is a 180 grn Speer RN seated at 3.00" OAl over 43 grns Reloader 15 CCI 200 primers Remington neck sized cases.

I believe in your frankin rifle..I built a dirtbike from 3 scrap dirtbikes.  I checked the parts over and i put all the best parts into one bike while my son and his girl friend watched.  They were the first ones to ride it when she became alive!!!!!!  The worst part is the frankin's all seem to be the best when there done.  Maybe its the craftsmanship we put into it.
