Barrel's Rate of Twist
« on: December 16, 2006, 05:24:10 AM »
I posted a question regarding barrel rate of twist on the Remington Forum, but did not receive a response.  Therefore, I thought that I would bring it over to the more active Predator and Varmint Hunting section.

I have a circa '73 Remington 700 BDL Varmint Special heavy barrel in 22-250 caliber.  I would like to shoot as heavy a bullet as is practical from this gun, but I do not know the "twist rate" that the gun was manufactured with.  I imagine that it may be a "1 in 12" twist, but if this is the case I will be quite limited in the weight of the bullets that can be stabilized using this barrel.

Anyone know this guns rate of twist?  Has Remington kept the same rate of twist for this model since it was introduced into the market?

Thanks,

Jay

Jay.

I am not sure what twist your rifle has, I have one of the older mod and i have found that 55gr works best for me. If you know some one close enough you might get a few heavier bullets and give them a try. I think my rifle must have1 in 12 twist probably the one in 12. What i did was load a bunch up with what ever thing i had on hand and used different powders in them to see which one's worked the best, and to tell the truth there was not a lot of difference in all that i tried. I tried some of Calhoon's bullets and had great luck with them. I also use the Calhoon bullets in my Rem 17 and let me say they work great on sod poodles and coyotes. If the coyotes come in close you may have to do some sewing. If i find out about the barrel twist i will  either pm you or catch you here on GB. I have an idea some one will come on here with the information you are looking for. good luck Jay........Joe

They weren't making the faster twists back then, yours is a 1-14" twist as is mine that I got in the early '80s. Mine will shoot 60 gr bullets if driven fast ok but it's really hard to beat a 52-55 gr bullet at 3600 fps out of the 22-250 for most 22-250 shooting needs. I have got the 40 gr bullet at 4000 fps route but had no better results with it that the 52-55 gr bullet loads.

The Remington 22-250s made today are still the 1-14 rate of twist. Their 223s are 1-12 twist. MI VHNTR
