Looking for a different sight for my Hawkin
« on: December 16, 2006, 04:30:58 PM »
I'm currently shooting a Cabelas Hawkin .50 cal flintlock.  I enjoy taking the gun hunting and shooting it at the range but am looking to improve upon the factory sights that came with the gun.  Any advice?  Perhaps it's just my eye sight but I have a hard time with the factory sights on targets much past 50 yards.  And I'd like to be able to shoot it accurately at the range out to 100 yards.  I filed the sides of the front post making it more narrow.  That helped quite a bit.  Previously the front post was wide enough to cover most targets at 100 yards.  Just wondering what others have tried or what custom sights they've switched to that have helped them out.  Thanks.

I have the Lyman Deerstalker with the white bead front sight. I filed the sight smaller as you did, and find it very good. My wife's rifle had horrid sights, and we put a set of fire sights on it, and they are very good too. I tried the Lyman reciever sight and found it good for target shooting, but could't get used to it enough for hunting.

Well this is not a flinter but this is what I went to for sights. I have the Lyman 57 SML rear sight and the Lyman 17 AML front sight.
I also went with a Lee Shavers fine post for the front sight. The fine post is great for shooting out to 250 to 300 yards.   Ron
