Huntsman is not in the 2007 lineup! The Sidekick is!
« on: December 16, 2006, 06:26:55 PM »
Looks like that is our answer. If you want a Huntsman, better buy one if you can find one. Looks like they are history. No mention of then at all on H&R 1871.

Sent my Pardner frame off on the 13th. The lady I talked to in Customer Service assured me there were plenty of barrels, 26" blued .50 caliber. No more 24". Have not heard back from them as to the frame's arrival. Quick remarked that they are closed between Christmas and New Year. Will post when I hear something.

I e-mailed H&R a couple weeks ago.  They told me that Hunstman barrels would still be available through their barrel accesory program.  The barrels are still listed on their website.

IIRC a year ago, or was it two? H&R/NEF offered a period during the Hoildays that they returned back to the old pricing procedure of newly ordered accessory barrels fitted for free, just pay the cost of the barrel(s) and postage. Has anyone here any info if they may offer that again? There are a couple of barrels I would like to get, one is a ML (however I did want the 24" not the 26" :(, I have absolutely no need to shoot 150 grains of BP!!!, especially out of a 24 or 26" barrel, well possibly if I was loading BP in the BC with a 32" barrel and hunting Buffalo with it, BIG Buffalo!!!)
Quick if you have any info or connections to check on this it would be appreciated, Thanks....<><.... :)

I may just hold out and try to find a used 24" ML barrel if they have none left at the factory, I did see one for sale but the seller wanted more than a new one!!!

MSP,
I have an experienced hacksaw that can turn that barrel into any length you want it! ;D ;)   Hmmmm, a 20" barreled Huntsman loaded with a large conical for swamp hunting :o  Now I'll need two lol.

MSP, this is just my opnion, but I expected a price increase on barrels this year that we've not seen yet, it could be that with inflation being what it is, we probably won't see any of the past offers again, remember there was also a $20 rebate on new rifles last year as well as the no fitting fee and $5 off on barrels. :-\

Thanks Critter, I did that to a .56 TC Renegade smoothbore many years ago. I chose the length because a TC White Mountain Carbine ramrod fits it perfectly, since them I have converted several ramrods, both wood and synthetic to any legth I needed. It came out so well I then did it to a .50 Caliber rifled Renegade I had. One of my hunting buddies wanted the .56 so much I traded him the .56 for a .45 TC Cherokee he had. Then another buddy and friend wanted 2 each done for them, 3 Renegade's and a Hawken, so I did those 5 plus another old .54 Renegade barrel that I got on E-bay for me.
I will try to get an original 24" Huntsman barrel but thanks for reminding me that a short barrel is just a hacksaw (or power chop saw!!!) away, that plus squaring the muzzle, dressing it off and possibly recrowning it and your good to go!!! And you know what, a 20" Huntsman does sound kind of "handy"....<><.... :)

OK Quick, now if everyone starts thinking, H&R/NEF "do it again---do it again---do it again", and if Dorothy will click the heels of her Ruby slippers together maybe it will happen again!!!....<><.... ;D

I called NEF Customer Svc this week to check on my barrel order -- the lady confirmed that my frame has arrived and that it will take at least four weeks to complete. When I first called to confirm availability, the price quoted was $82.00, plus fitting and shipping.

I'm used to my gun with a 28" barrel. I know the ML rifle barrel is heavier, but I want a 26" to help steady me when shooting ML silhouette at the range. Break-actions are short by nature -- my Pardner normally sits next to my 870 in the locker, and it's a lot shorter overall with its 28" barrel than the 870 is with a 24" slug barrel. This is one of the things that got me so interested in NEF guns. My very first gun was an old Wards .410 break-action, but I quickly "moved up" to repeaters. Now in old age, I'm happily going back to guns that have much longer barrels and much shorter actions.

After all, when was the last time I actually got a second shot at a grouse?   ;)

Merry Christmas to all on this board!!!

Dave

You must be speaking of ruffed grouse, because the prairie grouse I hunt here in Nebraska is a different story.  :)

Yep, Wisconsin ruffed grouse -- if you get two seconds to shoulder your shotgun, flick off the safety (or cock the hammer), and let loose, you're doin' good. I've sent many a charge of #7 1/2 behind a bird up here. I always say that the greatest danger a ruffed grouse suffers when I am in the woods with a shotgun, is that he might laugh himself to death . . .
