Marlin Leveraction in 50 ALASKAN
« on: December 17, 2006, 03:23:46 AM »
Has there been any interest in converting the Marlin leveraction or other proper leveraction rifle into the relatively new, but nevertheless awesome 50 Alaskan loading?  I believe that this load is significantly superior to the 45-70 balistically, no doubt creating more recoil to contend with.

Opinions, thoughts, and benefits from using this cartridge in a levergun.

JHT, the 50 alaskan has been around for quite a while. It was developed here in Alaska to handle our big bears. It was not very well know though. I have had 2 diferent marlins converted to this caliber. The winchester M71 and 86's are popular also but are getting expensive to use for a base gun nowadays.
Yes the recoil is heavy with full loads. That said for me at least I tolerate it better in a lever than a bolt gun. I don't care for the pistol grip models either. My current 50 was built by Nonneman on a stainless guide gun. It has a 20" octagon barrel. Just like the 45/70 you can load light loads in the 50A. Regards, Byron  ;D

Is it true the 50 AK is based on the 348 necked up to 50 caliber.

Cheese, Yes the 50 Alaskan is a necked up 348win case. You can also buy cases with the 50Alaska headstamp from starline brass. But that is a recent thing.  ;D Regards, Byron
