Another Question on the Beni/Sheridan..Cats?
« on: December 17, 2006, 05:46:21 AM »
I have a Benijiman 397/.177cal. The specs say 800 fps on eight pumps...but what about one pump....one pump will put a round nose pellet thru 3 or 4 sheets of good cardboard and I assume a daisy roughrider would too with a bb. The reason I'm asking is I need to do some cat reeducation and don't want to perforate the little darlings and have them run home....they are crapping under my deck and in the garden, walking on the cars, and terrorizing birds at my wife's bird feeder. So, do you think one or two pumps would inflict enough pain without penetration to do the behavior mod or should I scrap the idea? Thanks all.

I've tried it with mine for years, short of killing them, they just keep coming back! >:( My best defense or offense, has been a Catstop unit, haven't had a cat problems since I started using it!

The songbirds are the reason I want to keep the cats away, we have a bunch of feeders in the backyard, the cats come from the neighbors to the west, so far, one Catstop has worked, still have the birds, just no cats. ;)

Back several years ago when I was in college, I kept my dogs at my Parents place, I came in one day to take care of them and one of my dogs was laying on the porch.  Didn't think too much about it, put him back in the lot and went about my business, couple of days later same thing.  This went on for about a week and I asked Mom about it.  Well the neighborhood cats had been stalking birds at her feeders, she thought turnabout was fair play so she would go turn the dog loose on the cats.  It wasn't long until the cats didn't come to the bird feeder, I am not sure if it was deterence or extinction but it worked.  But this may not be an option for you but tree dogs seem to be a deterent to cats eating at the bird feeder.

MIne may not be a popular opinion, but pump the gun all the way up and land a pellet in their earhole or at the inside corner of the eye.  They don't run very far with that treatment, trust me.  Living in the sticks, we have a HUGE feral cat problem.  There are neighbors around who put out buckets of food for any and all cats.  Add to this the number of townies who drop off litters of kittens on the roadside.

Many people forget that while cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, they have NEVER lost their hunting instinct like MOST domesticated dogs have.  Cats kill and seem to truly enjoy it.  Beyond the songbird problem, which isn't a huge issue to me personally, they also kill a fair number of rabbits and can and will take a young game bird if given a chance.  Looking objectively at this, it shouldn't just be legal to kill cats, it should be MANDATORY.  Feral cats are bad news.  If your neighbors can't take care of their pets, do it for them.
