Rem 7600 Range Rpt - I got a shooter!!!
« on: December 17, 2006, 10:29:10 AM »
Today I made it to the range for the first time with my new Rem 7600 7mm-08.  Boy, you guys were sure right about the trigger!!  Pull weight is a little over 7Lbs, and it's definitely got some creep, but it breaks real clean.  I've definitely got to get a trigger job done on it.  The trigger took some getting used to with groups starting out at about 1 1/2" at 100 Yds, but the more I shot it the better the groups got.  By the end of the range session I was averaging about MOA with a few great groups toward the end.

Here is some pics of some of the latter groups I got.  These were shot with Hornady 154Grn RN on top of H414.  It's a load that shot well in my Rem 700 Mtn LSS so I thought I'd give it a go in the 7600.  The dark lines are 1/2" and the lighter ones are 1/4"

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am that this gun turned out to be a shooter.  I heard all kinds of claims about the 7600's accuracy or lack thereof...everything from a 2+" to sub MOA.  After todays range session, I have no doubt that with a good trigger job and some load development this rifle will be a consistent sub MOA performer!

Thanks to all that recommended the 7600!!  I gota tell ya....I'm definitely a happy camper!!!  ;D ;D

You ain't seen nothin' yet. Wait until you hunt with it. Nothing mounts and swings like a Remington pump!

My son has the 7600 in the 30-06 carbine.  He just mounted a leopold 1 3/4 x6 and really likes the set up.  His also shoots very well.

firstshot,
Congradulations on your new rifle. I had Alan Timney work on the trigger on 2 of my pumpguns. They break right around 3 lbs and real crisp with no creep or overtravel. The nice thing was I only had to send the assembly to him. Good Luck.

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!!!!  BEFORE you have a trigger job done on your new rifle, shoot it a bit more and see if the trigger doesn't wear in to about a 5 or 5.5 lb trigger pull.  I know that might sound a bit high but I like a heavier trigger pulll on my 760 and 7600 than I do on my bolt actions because of the pump action charateristics.  With the pump action fired off-hand the action of inertia and the rapid pumping of the fore end with your finger still on the trigger can cause an unwanted early discharge with too light a trigger pull.  I'd even take the rifle hunting with me before any modifications to the rifle to see how it shoots/acts in the field.  With groups like the ones you have posted you will not miss a deer or whatever you're hunting because of the trigger pull you have on it now.

Although the trigger pull weight is what I consider excessive, you do have a good point about not getting it too light.  The bigger issue it the amount of creep in the trigger.  Seems like you pull all day and it finaly fires the rifle.

I'm taking it to my gunsmith after the first so the year to get it tuned up.

Let us know how you make out Firstshot. I think your groups are great, bad trigger or not. My 7600 is my deer rifle so I'd be more than happy with those groups. I bought one of those spring trigger kits for mine...helped... a little. But to be honest the way I hunt (still hunting/tracking) a lot of my shots are at moving/running deer and I'm pretty sure my shooting form as far as trigger pull goes probably isn't textbook so I don't even know what a trigger job would do for me other than make me shoot a little better from the bench.

By all means -- if the creep is overly excessive, take it to your gunsmith.  I'm glad you got a shooter and by the looks of your posted targets, you got a very good one.

For most first shots, most people squeeeeeeez the trigger but for rapid follow-up shots they jerk the trigger.  It just happens.  I think it is more likely to happen with a pump action rifle or shotgun though.  When you work the action, if you're not careful, it is easy to pull the trigger inadvertently when you throw the forearm/slide forward if the trigger pull is too light.  That's the only point I was trying to make.

I totally agree!!  I'm thinking about 3 1/2 Lbs would be ideal.

Yes, a 3 1/2 lb trigger pull would be ok along with eliminating the trigger creep.
