Ruger Frontier 7mm-08
« on: December 18, 2006, 06:24:51 AM »
I would like to buy one of these frontier's in a 7mm-08 for my wife. Does anyone have one in this caliber. I had a remington 700adl in 7mm-08 and the recoil was not bad at all. I was wondering if the recoil on such a short rifle would still be ok for my wife. I think this rifle weighs 6.5 pounds. anyway any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Wynn,

Why not consider the .308. Them and the 7-08 are ballistic brothers in the field. You have more options in the 308. If your not a reloader, then managed rounds would be softer. If you reload, loading her up some beginning loads would give you 300 Savage ballistics.

After saying all of this try the following:
1-Start to teach her marksmanship with dry fire drilills.
2-In the dry fire drills , simulate recoil by grasping the barrel and shoving it back into her shoulder to simulate recoil.
3-Make sure the rifle fits her. LOP should be about 12.5" and weight of rifle all up should not exceed 7.5 lbs with scope and sling.
4-When introducing her to live fire, make sure she has good eye and ear protection.
5-In live fire, make shooting strings short, not more than 3 rounds without a break.
6-Spend a lot of time in the dry fire sessions. She should grasp the concepts of "open suprise break" and "calling your shot" before being introduced to "live fire". These concepts are best taught in dry fire sessions without the distractions of muzzle blast and recoil.
7-Dry fire practice cqn get boring, so limit the sessions to about 10 minutes a day.

Thanks for the reply. But I do not want a 30 caliber. I own a .308 and really like it, but the 7mm would allow me to shoot a 140gr.bullet at 3100fps. The 30 cal. cannot do this. I do reload and for me the .308 is an excellent round but i do like the ballistics of the 7mm-08. I deer hunt with a .270 and i feel that the 7mm-08 with less recoil and a short action performs just as well.

I was just concerned that the 7mm-08 in the frontier might have a little more felt recoil do to its size.    Thanks

my dad  and i bought one for my mother  for mothers day in 308win it's a joy to shoot and carry  she really likes it as well i was suprised at the preformance out of such a short barrel but it seems to do just fine. I think you will very happy with the frontier 7mm-08. You reload so ammo choices on the shelf dosent realy aply to you, but i dont and thats why we went with 308.                                                                                                                                                                                                     ;D superdown

7mm-08 is not going to shoot a 140gr bullet at 3100fps - even out of a 26" barrel. In a 26" barrel it'll max out at around 2900fps. Subtract 25fps per inch of barrel less than 26" and your looking at around 2650fps out of a 16" barrel. The 7mm-08 maxes out at around 2500fps out of a 14" handgun barrel. It's a good round but your not going to get 3100fps out of it.

The 7-08 is a great round, I've had excellent results with mine, even in My 15" Encore pistol on deer..........

I do not want to start anything, but I have owned a 7mm-08 in a 22" barrel and it would consistently shoot between 2800-3000fps muzzle. That is with 140gr. reloads. No pressure signs and grouped 1/2" and below at 100 yards. Just for extra information.

I think the 7mm-08 is a good choice in the Ruger Frontier.  I have one in .300WSM.  This is not a good caliber for this rifle.  Lots of muzzle blast and recoil.  I understand that Ruger is coming out with the .338 Federal and .358 Winchester in the Frontier.

I had a .308 frontier, recoil was not bad, muzzle blast was very anoying to me. mine did't like factory remington or winchester 150gr but I traded it off before I gave it a real chance!
