Wad Database?
« on: December 20, 2006, 12:32:37 PM »
Does anyone know of a data base with detailed information on the various wads that are available for reloaders. I used a recipe for a 1 1/4 game load. The wad used does not allow quite enough space for the shot. I need a similar wad that sits a bit lower in the hull, allowing a bit more space for the shot. I have no way other than buying diferent wads and trying to reload them to determine a wad with a bit more capapcity. The load shoots very well but some of the crimps started bulging and some opened to a point where some shot was coming out. Also in crimping some of them bulged a bit and they wouldn't cycle in my Benelli SBEll. I switched to my O/U and some of the shells had to be pushed into the chamber instead of dropping in. I tried increasing wad pressure and that didn't solve the problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Shotshell reloading differs from Metallic reloading in that you can't just swap components, but instead must have a specific formula and stick to the exact components in that formula. I would suggest you get a Lyman shotshell reloading manual. It details how changing anything within a reload can affect pressures and become dangerous. It also has a good database for changing your load.

In that 1 1/4 oz load, I changed wads from the Remington SP to the RP. The RP is lower where the shot cup starts, thus giving me extra space. My 1 1/4 oz loads are now good to go. The guy that owns the reloading component shop where I buy my stuff is the one who pulled out and different wads and we found the one that worked.

I emailed Remington and the lazy clerk who respnded suggested I look in "the manual". I have no idea what manual he was referring to but the bottom line he wouldn't get off my ass to help me. I basically asked him the differences in the RP and SP wads. So much for Remington customer support.

That's kind of surprising. I've e-mailed Remington a lot of questions over the past few years, some of them sort of off-the wall, they've always responded to my satisfaction.

As to a wad database - I started something like that a few years back, now I can't find it. Measured the dimensions of each wad I used at the time. If I ever come across it, I'll put the information in a post.

As Slim already stated, it not safe to switch componants in shotgun loads. If you do not want to buy a Shotgun Reloading manuls all of the powder manufactures give away small manuals that are up dated every year and you can get the latest and most reliable data from them, just ask someone where you buy your componants. I would highly recomcnd you buy the Layman Shot shell reloading manual , it has alot of very interesting charts and tables on exteror balistics where you can learn alot about what size shot will do you the best job for your shooting.

I indeed own a couple of shotgun shell reloading manuals and six for rifles and pistols. I also use load data from the manufacturers. However, unfortunately some of the load data you get results in recipes that sometimes don't quite fit in the hulls. The RP and SP wads are pretty close to being the same except that the RP allows for a bit more shot capacity which solved my problem. I don't believe this little variation in the wad can adversely affect the load. My component supplier who is a very expiernced reloader also didn't think that there could be a problem.

those rp's hold a lot.  i use them for 1 1/2 ounce loads of #4 for turkey shells and they almost dont fit.  Just barely crimps them flat, but they do go.

joshco84,
The problem I had with the 1 1/4 oz load was worse with the Winchester AA hulls which are tapered and hold less than the Remington hulls. I'm surprised you get 1 1/2 oz  with them. What hull are you using?

Have you tried the Hodgdon database program yet? There is a several wads mentioned for 1-1/4oz loads. Just load the details of the load info. This also will give you a limited choice of powders, not just Hodgdon.
