G2 Contender
« on: December 20, 2006, 04:39:37 PM »
I'm considering a G2 Contender but don't know if I want the stainless or blue.  Are there any pros/cons to either?  Also, is there a significant difference between the Contender or Encore.

Thanks...

rust....But it is misleading the ss has metal inside that will rust...Encore will handle larger calibers...ie 30-06, and belted mags. First decide what you want to shoot and where you will shoot. If you are in the wet and snow, the ss could be best choice. Then decide the caliber you would use and see if they make a contender barrel in that caliber. The contender is a bit smaller and lighter than the encore. Or you could become addicted and get some of all of the above.
Good luck

All three of my Contenders are blue.  My first one was used, and I didn't have any choice.  The next two are G2s, and I got them before Stainless was available so again no choice.  Many of my other guns are stainless, and when I have a choice I pick that.  As pointed out in a previous post stainless holds up better in the wet.  And more often than not in hunting season we have rain and snow here in Wisconsin.  It takes less work to keep a stainless gun in good shape in the wet.  They can't be put away wet, but sometimes blued guns start showing rust while still in the field.

Good luck on your choices.

Before taking a blued gun into the field in inclement weather, cover it with a very light coat of synthetic grease and you rusting problems will be greatly reduced.

I also use turtle wax (car wax) when in the field. It works pretty well, take care to clean it well first.
