question about selling firearms
« on: December 21, 2006, 03:50:49 AM »
I have a question about selling firearms over the net.I am not a ffl holder of any sort.My question is what does it cost the seller to take a rifle to the ffl holder and have him ship it to another ffl holder if thats what is supposed to happen? Can I just aquire the ffl info and ship the rifle myself? I was asking becuase I was considering selling off on of my 22 mag rifles.

I just paid $30 to ship a rifle I have sold and that includes shipping costs. It really varies and each FFL holder is free to set his own price.

Take a look at this page to find an FFL, then check with them to see if they're still in business and what they charge.

Also check Auctionarms.com for their list of dealers who will handle a transfer for you.  Shop around, and likely you will find that some will ship or transfer for less than others.  My FFL holder only charges me for the actual cost of shipping, he does not charge me a transfer fee.

(From the NRA-ILA's page: http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/FederalGunLaws.aspx?ID=60 )

Sales Between Individuals

An individual who does not possess a federal firearms license may not sell a firearm to a resident of another state without first transferring the firearm to a dealer in the purchaser's state. Firearms received by bequest or intestate succession are exempt from those sections of the law which forbid the transfer, sale, delivery or transportation of firearms into a state other than the transferor's state of residence.

My understanding is that you can send it via common carrier (NOT THE POSTAL SERVICE) directly to a FFL in your buyer's area.  It shouldn't cost YOU (the seller) anything.  All of the paperwork/phone calls are done at the buyer's end, and at his expense.

You can call the NRA-ILA at 800-392-8683  just to make sure.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

That applies to handguns only, long guns can be shipped via USPS in addition to UPS, Fedex, etc. Licensees can ship handguns thru the USPS after completing a 1508 and submitting it with the shipment, but not unlicensed individuals.

As the previous post said you may ship handguns through UPS next day direct to a FFL in another state. The cost is very high and you should find out the cost before shipping and include it in your sales price.

My last handgun shipped via UPS cost me over $60. Again it has to be next day air, I insured for a large sum and thats X amount per $100 of value and then they charged me a fuel charge and a charge for shipping to a isolated area. I did not have to show proof that I was shipping to a FFL but I made sure that the FFL was a listed dealer to protect myself. I do not have an FFL myself.

Most places charge a FFL fee of $20.00 plus shipping fed x was something around $10.00 to send a rifle back to Remington so in the neighborhood of $30.00 should get it for you.   JIM
