After oh 10 years now I have got GB talked into LIVE CHAT.... wow... never thought it would happen but it did...

So before I go and set it up... will it get used?

I'll use it, I think it would be more convenient than PMs, specially with the 60 second tween posts timeout.

I have never used a live chat room because I've never had a group I wanted to chat with. But, this group is different. I'd like to try it. Just think how easy it would be exchanging info when trying to troubleshoot, explain repairs, or to discuss items for sale.

That's very true Wally, but once it's in print here, it's there for future reference and search(if it gets fixed) , in the chatroom, it's just lost as far as troubleshooting is concerned, unless Matt can archive the chat. An example is mtjerry's .270 on an SB1 frame experience.

Yeah logs will be in place but I think if it is fixed in chat it should be posted in the forums for all to benefit. I see the chat taking the general BS chatter out of the forums and leaving the core information that people are seeking. In a sense it should clean up the forums some and to an extent but you will always have those who are on at different times using the forums for general chatter as well.

I have seen several sites add chat and the posts increase because people get to know each other even better and post more often. We shall see, I am looking for software and once that is found we will give it a go. If it works great if not... we will have tried...

I was very reluctant to even approve live chat at all. The ONLY reason I did was it's NOT permanent. It goes away very quickly I have been assured. I will NOT agree to any sort of archive for chat. I am positive stuff is gonna happen there that I would NOT approve of happening and ONLY if it goes away real quickly can I live with that. There is just no way to moderate live chat really. If it gets out of hand too badly it might not last, at least not if I find out it's getting out of hand.

Matt knows how he talked me into it and for it to stay it needs to accomplish what he seems to think it will which is to increase the GBO revenue stream. If it does that and if it doesn't get too badly out of control and IF it's not archived I'll try to live with it even tho it sure goes against my better judgment to do it.

I do understand your feelings on live chat , just look to the past to see what can happen on just a forum , however with the core group that you have on this site taking in all the forums i feel that we can do a good job of policeing ourselfs as long as all behave like adults .

I for one do not know how much i would use the chat , my fingers do not move fast , but i would like to see it happen if nothing else than to learn faster typing .

If it happens..and works properly then great...BUT...from what I have seen of them...live chat rooms always draws undesirables....and hopefully it will be set up far enough away from the forums to not bring those types here...I fully understand the wants of increasing revenue streams here to help off set the cost of maintaining this site..but I am concerned as to what will be taking place in those private chat rooms...somehow reflecting on this great site...

I will certainly try it. Mac11700 brings some very vitals to the forefront on this topic. I am thinking this is what Graybeard has been concerned about and it is a concern. Time will tell.

The chat server is up and running, I have only added a few rooms but we will add more.

The software is FlashChat and requires the Flash plugin. It is real nice and easy to use with lots of options to allow you to customize till your heart is content.

Real nice thing about it is that your username and password for the forums is the same on the chat... No need to re-register...

I have just set it up and will be tweaking it if anyone has a problem getting in let me know... If you get a banned message please let me know asap, this is a member group issue that I will have to address due to the many groups we have here at GBO. If you are a moderator in the forums you are a moderator in the chat and same for admins. The membership system is shared between both the forums and chat so things should run smooth with it.

You can be kicked from a room, banned from a room or from chat all together and even gagged while in the room if the need arises lol. Also there are bots that will act as moderators. There is much potential here so lets play with it.

Very nice work matt. The flash chat is definitely nicer than java based ones. Needs a little tweaking, but very good job.

He is 23 now, and I need to buy him a rifle, he is left eye dominant so I have to find left handed firearms for him. He is a good kid most the time, but his mother, my X-wife raised him and she is anti gun and could be a poster child for the Bradeys.... Don't ask me why I married her, I do that enough on my own.... He has shown interest in muzzle loaders, so I am trying to track down a left handed rifle for him. But that is better off posted elsewhere.

This is as far as I can get:

Loading main chat window.. 96%

That is as far as I have gotten on several attempts. Must need to have something before it will finnish loading? $:-\$

Greg Merry Christmas to you, your son Andy and his Mother. Think about a Sidekick or Huntsman for a left handed ML for your son, either that or get an accessory barrel for one of your H&R's. They work as well left as right so you could use it also and they are among the most accurate ML's on the market. Look at GB's H&R classifieds, in KTP, or check small guns stores you travel by. After hunting season and before Christmas many people trade in their guns for needed cash. Another good time to look is just before 4/15, tax time you know, people need money then...Merry Christmas...<><....

Just left the chat "lounge" room after about 30 minutes. I got my text, background, etc colors adjusted for my eyes and it was pretty cool after that. I think it nice to ask guys a lot of questions in a much shorter time frame. I think you get to know them a little better too. I like it ....

what are you using for your browser? it works in IE6 / IE7/ Firefox that I know for sure... But you must have the flash plugin for it wo work. or may need to upgrade the version you have to the newest version..

This computer crashed about a week ago, and things are not quite right yet. We are going to be looking for a new computer over the next week. I'm sure I wont have any trouble then. Just can't figure out what new system we want, any suggestions?
