7-30 3rd party reloading
« on: December 21, 2006, 08:07:00 AM »
I thought I read someplace on here about 7-30 cases being sent off to be reloaded.  Anyone remember seeing this before?  I don't reload and have been shooting factory ammo.  Would like to try something besides the round nose factory stuff.
Tks in advance

Try Reed's Ammo and Research.  He is one of our sponsors here at GB, and is highly reguarded.  I would use his loads any time.

Yep, it was me.  I sent my brass to Ron over at Reed's Ammunition Research.  He did a great job and it improved the groups I was getting out of my Contender with a 14" barrel.  Until I'm able to start hand loading I'll keep going back to Ron.

Reed1911,

What cast bullet are you using that’s weighing-in at 150 grains?  I am using the Lyman 287346 and it weighs-in at 135 grains.  It is a super good shooter.  I am getting right at 2052 fps.  What velocity are you getting with the 150?  Thanks…BCB

IT is a custom build, right now I'm still finishing the 7mmTCU with 1750-1800 and expect the 7-30 to be running 2000-2100.

Reed1911,
Just curious but what powder are you thinking of using for the Waters and the 150 grainer?  I am using H-335 and WC-844 (about 1.0 to 2.0 grains slower than H-335) to get the 2052 fps with the 135.  I think I am at or very close to Max with the charges of each that I am using.  I don’t know if I could get 2100 fps with the H-335 or the WC-844 without pushing the envelop a bit.  I would think to get the 150’s going near the 2100 fps mark you will be using a slower burner?  With the 287346, I tried faster pistol powders and slow rifle powders but accuracy was not very acceptable.  I must admit I was a bit surprised to find the H-335 and WC-844 gave the best accuracy.  They both work well with jacketed bullets but never so well with cast.  I guess ya just never know…BCB

Most of the powders we use are not canister powders, we typicly buy the powder in bulk and T&E with the various calibers until we find the suitable matche(s). However I can usually relate them to off the shelf powders, so: Assuming a 14" tube, 4895 can run up as high as 2200 with the jacketed, and 2250 with the cast bullet we are using (it has a very low frictional coefficent), 2520 runs the cast pretty well and gets roughly the same velocity, but with it most cast bulets loose accuracy as they get toward the max load, just as you said. I have not tried it yes, but we may latch onto VV135, we'll just have to see how it does.
335 is pretty fast for the 7-30, but sometimes with cast bullets, and most of the time with plain base, the faster powder do work better.
