I'm a sucker for walnut. I have and admire laminates, but if I have a choise, Walnut. But, hay, to each his own. Which blows your skirt the highest?

I, too, prefer walnut. Walnut is one of the things that "blows my skirt up."

I like a nice piece of Walnut, but I like the toughness of a strong laminated. Just less likely to scratch up as easy a walnut. I use my laminated stocks out in the woods, and have treated them with Flitz polish wax. Wicks the rain, and has worked great for me.

I agree, you cannot beat a nice piece of walnut, all the laminates just try to be as nice as walnut but they never really are and they NEVER NEVER feel the same as walnut.
So far I believe it's 100% for walnut, that must tell you something!!!....<><.... ;D

Look at it this way...and then decide what to do...Between a really nice Walnut set and your chosen laminate...Which would you rather see go into the woods hunting with? Walnut stocks are pretty awesome..but not my favorite on a hunting gun that will see brier patches...choke vines...blow downs..rain storms..ice storms..mud slides..creek inundations and generally knocked around...Yup...they sure are pretty to look and to hold...and to take to the range...to let everybody admire...and make our Handi's look awesome...but...I want a stock on my hunting guns that will stand up to abuse...and one that I won't get too awfully upset if they get dinged up..nor do I want a stock set that will warp easily if they get soaking wet...Since I don't like the current NEF offering in synthetics...and I don't want to spring the money to have Wayne York build me the first set of Kevlar lites for a Handi...I'll stick with the laminates...I do love special woods on Handi's...they do dress it up exceeding well...and they do have their place in my scheme of things...but..just not on a everyday hunting gun...When I do have my next set of customs built..they won't be going into the woods...they will be for show & for the range...and I'll put a different set on it to go hunting with...

As everyone has stated, walnut is nice, but I'm with Mac and Aaron, and the camo laminated is my favorite or all, even tho I like the gray and red too, the camo is my first pick....and they're available, and are a bolt on, and are checkered, unlike the GSI stocks. ;)

Hi Dave, yes you can get both the checkered  American Black Walnut BC stock and also the checkered American Black Walnut TDC stocks from H&R. I have both on a couple of my guns and they are great.
I, as Quick, also like the Camo Laminate, but they rank a close second to me, in my preferances first place goes to the walnut....<><.... :)

If we are helping to choose a "woods" rifle, then I would say yes to laminate. Dave's question was not about a "woods" rifle but a choice between 2 custom stocks. I love laminate stocks like many of you do and own a few. I almost never take a fancy stocked rifle hunting with me.

Dave ... are you going to be hunting with this rifle or is it a range rifle?

I guess I am missing the need to differentiate between range rifles and hunting/woods rifles. I hunt with all my rifles (after of course sighting them in at a range) and never worry about if its walnut, laminate or plastic. I treat all of them the same. The plastics are lighter but what I consider "bland". The laminates are strong, have some personality, but heavy. The walnut, or any wood with grain/figure fall in between. Heavier then plastic, lighter then laminates, and have more personality. As far as moisture proof, all my laminates and wood stocks get sealed with Tru-Oil and I've never had an issue with warping. I've been able to kill a lot of game with all three. As long as the rifle will put the bullet where I want it, they're all good. Yes, the wood rifles show their age and miles. But, what the hell, so do we. Any rifle is just a tool. Owning one is not a marriage or adoption and should not be a persons major investment. Dress it anyway you like, but go enjoy it. Kill something.
As was requested by original poster, just my opinion.

Here are a couple GSI walnut stocks. First one is Mac's, the other one is knight0334's in the "let's see some Handis" thread in the FAQs

Dave

I tried to post this last night but kept loosing it, What i ment is that i like Tiger Wood and anyone that has seen my Handi's knows i love color , but (  I ) feel that the T.W. would be too pertty to take to the woods , also from a safety stand point i'm not sure that i would feel real good about having a rifle stock with white or near white in a deer woods .

Apparently there's a software issue that if two posts are made close to the same time, one gets bumped into cyberspace, Mac has lost 3 posts this way. :(

quick ... thanks for those pictures. I must have missed that post. Beautiful stocks....

Maybe it is me that got a little confused over this post. I was probably thinking Dave wasn't going to be hunting with this rifle ... maybe because of the tigerwood option. I use all of my rifles too and keep all in the best condition I possibly can. In my home, there is no range or woods rifle difference. I only asked that silly question because if there was an answer to it, it would influence my choice. Both choices would be a winner in my book.

You're welcome!! ;) I think I might have moved that thread from a sticky to the FAQs before your return to the forum, so you could very well have missed it.

I add to and update the FAQs regularly, so it doesn't hurt to browse it once in a while, ya never know what might be missed in there!! ;D

That's ok Wally...If you take a look at those GSI stocks on my 243...these aren't what I call knock around stocks..Yes..they are finished properly..but..depending on where I am hunting...they would be so scratched up by the time I was done...it would just kill me to have to completely refinish them...The next custom set that will be going on my Handi's...will cost 3x5 times as much to replace...Those will be for show...and for play...I have working stocks...and show stocks...and while the show stocks are fully usable as  a working stock...I just choose not to use it in such fashion...If I were to make the ultimate working stock for a Handi..I would let Wayne build the mold and go about making a synthetic set for it...one that was as lite as a feather...but stronger than iron...He's been building them for quite a while... http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eoregunsmithing/id1.html

Walnut is gorgeous, particularly if it's well figured and there isn't anything like it.  I hear the old saying all the time about life being too short to hunt with an ugly gun so the more I think about it, you should hunt with what you like.  Don't misunderstand, I love laminate, too.  Guns are made to use though, and the scratches, dings, etc., at least in my mind, represent character and memories of hunts that now live in memory.  We're only here a short time so get some nice walnut you can enjoy both at the range and in the woods.  My .02.

Has anyone seen the nutmeg Laminate(I like the wood not the design of the stock)on the odds-n-ends on GSI.I like it better than the Tigerwood.I wish I could make up my mind.I want to get it done and back home.So many to choose from this is hell.I want something that looks like Fancy Walnut without paying 200 + for wood.Dave
