I just picked up my new 1895 GS from my dealer, the wife called ahead and made sure he taped the box good so that I could'nt see it before christmas morning, must have used 1/2 a role of packing tape :'(  I caught the 45.70 bug a couple of months ago from the guys on the handi forum and have been having a blast with my reloads.  If the Marlin is as accurate and fun as the handi it's going to be a great year for me and my chiropactor ;D

P.S. If anyone has any reloading recipies that work for them that they would like to share they would be appreciated!

I use the Remington 405 grain soft points. They are inexpensive, but a great hunting bullet. Enough IMR 4064 to give it about 1850 fps. It's a very accurate load out of my 1895 Guide Gun. Get yourself a prefit Limbsaver recoil pad. It'll save you money at the chiropractor.

I have the Marlin 1895SS and tried out several different powders and finally found out that IMR 3031 is about as accurate as it gets in the 45/70. I've enjoyed my 45/70, but now that my old shoulders are wore out, I'd like to trade it for something a little milder.

Three words that I can't stress enough...

LIMBSAVER, LIMBSAVER, LIMBSAVER!

It WILL take the bite out of the 45/70. It has also made my .350 Rem Mag FUN to shoot instead of a chore.

Thanks for the advice. I will look to s to see if the Limbsaver will work for me as I really like the feel of my Marlin in my hands when I'm walking through the woods. And I also like to know that it is capable of putting down anything. I had quit shooting the hardcast 405 grain handloads as they were getting brutal to me and dropped down to some 300 grain handloads. I'll see about the Limbsaver.

If the limbsaver doesn't do the trick try a Pace recoil pad. It takes all the sting out.

Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
55 grains H4198, about 2175 fps and 28,000 CUP

Marlin 1895 45-70 22" barrel
405 grain Remington JSP seated to 2.55" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
49 grains H322 START
55 grains compressed H322 MAXIMUM, about 1950 fps and 40,000 CUP
