winchester 209 primer vs remington clean bore
« on: December 22, 2006, 12:08:16 PM »
Experienced several misfires with the Remington primers while sighting in. Switched over to a friend's Winchester and no such problem. Anyone else experience this? Remington primers eventually fired, on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. Winchester  primer seems to be of a different diameter with a smaller exposure on the bottom. I'm a Winchester man at this point.

Wow. What is it about these products, including powder vs pellets, sabots vs powerbelts, etc that have such unpredictable and varied outcomes, as evidenced by the many posts herein.  I guess it's part of the excitement and frustration that seems to go with muzzleloading that has remained constant even from the early days of round balls and percussion caps to the newest high tech rifles.  I hope someday to trust the muzzleloader enough to use it exclusively for deer but for now, the 30-06 still comes out for our primary rifle season.

I have always used W-W 209 primers. But the working up a load and trying to find the perfect bullet and powder combination is to be the funnest thing about muzzleloaders. It does add to the frustration levels but when you can find the perfect combination and get a good bullet group and take your first big game animal with a muzzleloader you will be hooked! You will put the centerfire down and want to hunt exclusively with a muzzleloader but then thats what happened to me and I am still working out load combinations.....

My Knight muzzleloader came with a bright yellow sticker on the front cover stating,"Because of the size varience in the 209 shotgun primer, Knight Rifles recommends the use of the Winchester 209 Shotshell Primers in our 209 Breech Plug."

Exactly what i experienced. I have a winchester x150 and the primers were doing great, once i hit the 15th On to the 20th primer, i was getting delayed ignition, i had horrible primer build up on my bolt after 2 shots. I went back to my cci primers and they only left  a light blue film on my bolt and fired perfect. Im going back to cci now. Amazes me at how much stuff comes out that claims to fix your issues only once you get one thing fixed, The "fixer' causes another problem.

My CVA inline has shown some misfires with a few different primers, but my Thompson Center and Knight are fine with any 209 primer I've tried to date. These misfires must be a CVA and Winchester breechplug issue for both of you fellas.

I have not had any problem with misfires with any of the 209 primers I have tried. I used Winchester, Federal, Remington Kleen bore.  I keep a pick with me at the range and make sure the flash hole stays clear.  I have shot 10 shots before having to run my pick through my flash hole. I also have not had a 209 primer fail to fire. I guess in the 5 years of using my Encore I have not had the misfortune of misfires. My first Encore now uses the 25 ACP breach plug and next year I am switching to the 25 ACP in my Pro-hunter. I want to finish out the season with the Kleenbore primers before I switch.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Nope Biff, nothing wrong with this breechplug, i think i bought a bad batch of primers. Im going back to cci due to the kleenbore primers leaving horrible fouling on my bolt. I was lucky to get 4 shots before i had to pull my bolt and wipe it down. With the cci's i can shoot all day. CCI'S fit the best and allow me to just open the bolt and tilt the gun up and they fall out. The kleenbores seemed to expand and made me use my tool.

As far as blow by I do see more with the Win 7 than I did with the STD win 209.
I have not used the Rem klean bore. The 7 primers do help with the crud ring and I get great groups.
