What Barrel Tapers And Lengths Do You Use
« on: December 23, 2006, 04:52:08 AM »
I would like to know what barrel tapers and lengths you are using in high power silhouette for wood and composite stocks. I will be using a Rem 700 short action and want to know what will make weight.

I use a 26" long Shilen #3 with a wood stock on my Rem 700 short action 260, and it just does make weight for Hunter class. With a Brown Precision stock it was barely over 8lbs. and could use a #4 no problem. That's with a Weaver T24, Weaver rings and bases, adl trigger guard, etc. Nothing fancy.

Thanks for your response. I have been told that w/ a Pharr stock I could go with a #5 26 in. long. I also am looking at the T24.

You might make it for standard rifle, but I doubt it'd do it for Hunter. Of course you could always start with a #5 and countour it if it was too heavy.  Those Pharr stocks are really light, but not much less than a Brown. BTW, Natchez has T24s on sale for a good price right now.

CCG, My hunter rifle has a Hart 5-1/2 taper 25" long installed on a Remington 700 long action. It is in a Pharr RT stock, with a Leupold 24 BRD it comes in at 8lbs 7-1/2oz. It is just under the weight limit but is legal. I am getting ready to build another on a short action with a number 5 taper. It will allow me more options for recoil pad and scope mounts.

Good luck, Paul

My mistake, listed the wrong weight. How about 8lbs 15-1/2oz, just under the limit of 9lbs. Sorry about that fingers faster than the brain.
