20 inch turkey barrel???????????
« on: December 23, 2006, 12:04:26 PM »
Is the 20 inch 12 gauge camo barrel tapped for the weaver scope mount like the other 12 gauge barrels????? I purchased one today and it doesn't look to have the extra holes for the mount behind the sights like a 24 inch barrel I have seen before. Thanks for any responses.

I have one also. No holes for a scope mount in mine either. Not even sure if there is enough meat in the barrel to drill them.

I don't think the problem is lack of meat in the barrel the 24 inch has the holes for the weaver mount available from T/C. I didn't look that close at mine when I bought it yesterday, I guess I just assumed it did like the 24 inch. Oh well as long as it will sight in when I pattern it I will be happy with the fiber optic sights.

I moved the Weaver base back so that the front two screw holes in it aligned with the rear most threaded holes on the barrel.  That way, it wasn't necessary to remove the front sight so as to use the holes beneath it.  I then marked the location of the bases rear holes onto the barrel, drilled and tapped as was necessary.  The new holes go into the meatier portion of the barrel, ahead of the chamber.  If you're careful, you can do so without going all the way through.  I wasn't particularly careful, so I now have holes through my barrel.  They are, of course, filled with flush screw shanks loctitied securely in place.  I figured that the relatively low pressure of the 12ga. would do me or the gun no harm, and a couple hundred rounds of mag loads over the years has demonstrated this to be true.

Now, my Leupold Turkey Ranger 2.5x can be removed if desired in order to use the iron sights, sighted above the base.  It also puts the scope a bit further back, which helped me to more readily obtain correct eye relief.  Many turkeys, if they could, would testify to the effectiveness of it all.

My barrel has always patterned high, even with the rear sight lowered all the way.  I've tried numerous loads with no change.  I thought maybe it has the wrong front sight.  I've meant to call TC and just haven't gotten 'round to it.  I've used it for two years and so far it hasn't cost me a bird ( I just hold low ), but I know it's coming.  Thought maybe y'all could give me a measurement off your front sight.  Thanks in advance!! GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I wasn't quite sure the proper method by which to measure the front sight height, especially without actually removing it from the barrel.  If you can't read the caliper in the pic.....it's 1.35" from the bottom of the barrel to top of sight.  Subtract barrel diameter from that number, and I suppose the sight height is revealed.  Incidentally, my barrel length is 24", so if your's isn't, the info is most likely of no use.

UPdate....Was at a gun show this weekend and a friend of mine was with me and looking at a Encore turkey barrel (24") that a dealer had on display.  I looked to see if the barrel was d & t'd and of course it was.  The dealer who I've known for many years explained to me that all Encore barrels made by TC were D & T'd.  When I told him that I had one that wasn't, Three more "TC experts" chimed in and agreed with him.  All TC made Encore barrels including all shotgun barrels were so equipped.  I asked if it were possible that the camo tape was covering the holes.  He said he didn't think so and reminded me that my eyes were getting as old as the rest of me and that I probably couldn't see much anymore( which IS true) and those tiny little screws filling the holes were camo'd too.  Look again a little closer.  OK,.... blind old man has gotten out his strongest reading glasses and a good magnifying glass and looked again.  I then pulled out my pocket knife and scraped off the camo about where the first hole should be. And...looked some more...NO HOLES.  Evidently there was at least three made that were not D & T'd.  I agree that there isn't a whole lot of meat there, but it's the same as the 24" barrel which is D & T'd.  majorKAP, Thanks for the measurement.  I finally checked mine and it is 1.31" and yes, you measured it exactly right.  Mine being a 20" barrel would require a little taller sight I would think.  Guess I ought'a call TC and ask about the sight and the holes.  GOOD SHOOTIN' to all, Walt  :-\ :-\

I really wasn't interested in scoping mine anyway, but I was thinking ' bout setting one of those little receiver sights(like they're putting on the short .50 cal BP barrel) on mine.  I'm thinking that woulda' made one fine turkey getter.  Oh well...GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt :D
