yote calling

Im haveing problems. I go coyote hunting with another guy that has a better call than me. Thats a problem but not the one i need help with. We like to hunt in thick wooded places and use a shot gun most of the time. Every time we go together he shoots the yote and i get nothing. I think it maybe that he is looking the sameway that the speeker is facing. What do you guys think? I have got to shoot a few cats while with him but no yotes. I can take my call and go by myself and kill them all the time but never with him. This morning It happend again, after doe hunting we called for almost 30 sec before boom.

I call yotes here in S. Tx. and we usually trade off as to who is going to shoot.  However I usually give who with me the shooting rights, because I love to watch 'em come in and watch the other guy shoot.  In fact the last few times. I just watched. didn't even have a gun in hand and then got to rib him if he missed.

Don't beat yourself up, The idea is to have fun and enjoy the out of doors. If you can call when you are by yourself you might be a little bit intimidated by this person, If this is the case go by yourself for a while and build up your confidence. I know the feeling and the only way you can get over this is do a lot of calling by yourself or with some one you feel good with.

When i hunt with a buddy i just say you get what is on your side and i get what is on my side that way you never know when or exactly where. we called a pair yesterday and split them his on the right and mine on the left glad to say i did not miss lol. The key is to make a plan from the start. i have seen it happen when a guest is along, that they are waiting for you,and you them and neither gets to bust a cap.But like Joe says, just enjoy it,whatever comes along,Your worst day hunting beats the best day of work.

I agree with oso45-70 as it is great to get out there and have fun. Your situation is IMO just a luck of the draw type thing. Ideally, your setup should allow you to watch each others backs. this should average out who does the shooting in the long run.
Course those younger ones may be coming straight in to the speaker instead of circling which has seemingly givin your buddy an advantage.

its all about the fun if i invite a buddy to go i let him do all the shooting i just shoot back up i just have more fun that way and if i miss it was because he missed first and i was laughfing to hard... LOL

I remember my hunting partner and I were both trying to get our badger bowls in the club we were both in. I had killed 14 badgers before he ever got a shot at one. 
I remember surf fishing down in Baja with another friend, I was catching nothing but white seabass in the 10 to 20 lb class and my buddy was catching nothing but halibut :)and we were standing right next to each other rigged up the same way using the same bait. We traded places and nothing changed. Like what was said before, the whole idea is to enjoy what your doing, your time well come.

Are you both using shotguns?  Or is he using a rifle.  If so, he may be looking farther out and picking them off before they get in range for you. 

Also, are you checking the terrain near your stand?  Is he setting up to overlook optimum terrain (ie; near a draw, path, or common terrain feature that yotes will follow), whereas you are facing less than optimum terrain?

Ok, I think i know what was going on. We both were using shot guns but now i have changed to a 9mm rifle. I did get a shot on one sunday but was unable to find it. He always sets down and looks straight at the speaker and the speaker is facing the same way he is facing. Since im a good guy i alway look a the opposite of him and alot of the time that was the way we just walk in from. So i picked up the 9mm and he still has 12 gage we set together looking the same way. We now have an agreement that if one comes in, its fair game and if 2 come in, I shoot first and then he shoots. Now cats are a differnt agreement. When a cat comes in, we just make sure he dont leave on his feet.

My hunting partner/brother and I split the land with a tree, fence, point of a hill, etc to determine who shoots what. When we set up a stand, he places the caller where we think it should be in accordance with our positions and we pick our landmark at that time. For example, we set up and this time I am on the right side of the caller. We picked a tree down in the valley and visualize a straight line from the tree to the caller. If a yote shows up to the right of the line and I have a good shot, I take the shot. If a yote shows up on the right side of the line and for some reason (might be out of range) and it crosses to the left side of our line, it is now my brother's shot to take. we have always enjoyed this arrangement and get some laughs out of it too at times.

Now you said you are shooting a 9mm rifle coyote hunting and your partner uses a shotgun? Maybe you guys need to at least consider higher powered rifles for this type of hunting. If you do not want to outlay too much cash, then consider a Handi bb in .223. These have a good reputation for good accuracy and will give you two guys shooting ranges only limited by your shooting abilities in your woods type hunting. There should be more available shooting opportunities for the both of you unless I am missing something here.

Its not that i dont have a .223  We like the close range calling, theres nothing like that feeling of 2 or 3 yotes running staight at you at 5 yards.

That sounds awesome twocan ... you guys must be great callers as I think the closest any we have ever called one in was like at 40 yds. 5 yards? I think I would wet my pants if I ever experienced that situation.

All you need to do is setup in thick cover, If you can see 50 yards then so can they. I like it like that .
