The .500 S&W is the only .50 cal, other than the Huntsman muzzleloader, available in a Handi.

mtnbkr1,

There are several semi-custom rounds available.  The 50 Beowulf is a nearly as powerful (in a rifle) and the 500 Smith is in a revolver, it was made for Ar-15 rifles and uses .500 bullets.  There is the 50 GI designed to fit in a custom 1911 pistol.  There is also the 50 Wyoming Express being marketed by Freedom Arms (Casull), and of course the round that started it all, the 50 Action Express, available in the Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun.  All of these cartridges use .500 bullets, but I believe the 50 Action Express was the first cartridge to use bullets of this diameter specifically.

If a person wanted a .50 cal round bigger than .500S&W, the .50 Alaskan and a custom die set to allow the use of .500" bullets instead of .510" bullets should work, this has been discussed at great length in the past, but no one has done it here......yet!! ;D The Handi's ejector or extractor wouldn't work with the Beowulf's extreme rebated rim.  The .50-110 or .50-140 in a modern rifle will whip em all with less pressure, and should work well in the Handi due to the fact that the larger case allows more room for the bullet which reduces pressure, but the same and higher velocities are achievable.

Quick,
This is really strange that you should bring up the 50 Alaskan. After reading this http://www.z-hat.com/The%20Fifty.htm  last week, I have been wondering how this could be done in a Handi using the .500 bullets instead of .510, didn't think of the custom dies. I was also concerned about the pressure but found out that runs around 40k?
In your opinion would this conversion really offer any more than the 45-70 with Ruger #1 loads? If not it would still be nice to have a one of a kind Handi though ;D

I originally stated that in my post, but deleted it to not bring the .45-70 into the subject, but that's exactly what I said!! ;) The .45-70 even in levergun loads is capable of the same velocity in bullet weights, and with it's higher BC, has better down range ballistics. Compare the 525gr BTB Piledriver with a max pressure of 40kpsi to the top loads for the 50 AK.
