long eye relief scope or red dot

I am kicking around the idea of putting  a scope or red dot site on an SKS. I would be using the rear sight replacement type of mount.
The gun will not be used for any particular purpose just another toy.
What scopes or red dot sights have you used that you would recommend?

I know they are called scout rifles - I despise that bogus title.

I recently put a red dot on my AR15, it has some advantages in that it's fast to pick up and shows up well against some backgrounds, some other backgrounds they don't show up as well, but the major thing that struck me is how darned small everything looks, I'm used to a scope on a rifle and with no magnification it seems a little odd, of course if you are shooting in the woods or at short range, a red dot is pretty good.

I have used both.  It depends on what you want the rifle to do.  If you are talking just a fun toy shooting primarily 50 yards or less (kind of blaster rifle) then the red dot works very well and you can use it to 100 yds if you are willing to accept 3" or more groups.  In most cases the dot will more than cover the target at 100yds.

I am 55 and find that military sights (other than peeps) are just to hard to see any longer so I have gone to scopes/dots or peeps.  My preferred dot is the Bushnell (the round one not the halo site) with the 4 reticles.  I prefer red over green as red is clearer for me and less likely to blend in with foilage.  The intensity is adjustable, you have the choice of 4 different reticles (large dot/small dot/cross and large circle with dot in middle) and I have not had any problem with it on my AR15 in any light as long as you use the shade that comes with it.  Battery life is good and quite reasonably priced.

I have used LER scopes mounted out on the barrel but don't like them as well for close work.  For scopes my guns primarily have 10X Bushnell 3200 Mildots. 

A buddy just recently picked up an ATN Digital Dot that looks real promising.  Quite a bit more than the Bushnell (almost twice as much) but has some alternate reticles that are useful.  Just need to see how well it works in bright ligh as there is no sun shade with it.

Check with a few of your buddies, you might find one that has one or the other you can play with before making a decision....
