How about a little help?
« on: December 24, 2006, 05:54:09 AM »
Lets have a little TLA discussion guys.  Anybody do any hunting or take any game with a TLA so far this year?  Get your TLA out of the safe and watch a western with it close at hand.  What state are you in with your TLA? A TLA get together would really be something....

Well I fiddle with mine all of the time. Before moving up here to Alberta I lived in Houston and used my #5 to cull hogs and whitetail on a friends ranch. I also used it two moves before that when I lived in Midland to take coyotes and javalina. I have taken it deer and elk hunting in Colorado to no avail as well. Over the past few years though it has either sat in my safe or on my lap at my chair being fiddled with while watching TV or reading.

Boxhead, I am in sort of a quandry as to how hot of a load I want to shoot in my TLA's.  I dropped one of the Hammerhead 330's in there a while back and sure enough the cylinder was long enough to accomodate it. Since the TLA is pretty much not replaceable I am not sure I want to run it that hard.....On the other hand, the Ruger handles the heavy loads easily and the TLA seems to be stouter in all dimensions. What do you think?

I have loaded the 320 gr GCWLN's to a bit over 1300 fps (21.5 grs H110) in my #5 and it is a finely accurate. It is what I carried on my elk hunts. That was before I got hooked on the 45 Colt for heavy loads. I now load the #5 down as well using the 250 gr SWC at 1200 fps or so w/ 20 grs of 2400. Like you, they ain't making them anymore and Bill's "Lifetime Guarantee" doesn't mean much anymore.

Here you go, 2 dogs .......

I believe you met this fella last summer.  I believe the load was a 300 gr Cast Performance but he would have to give you more details.

On another forum you made the statement that you had a pic for everything. Now I know that was a true statement! LOL

Timley Topic, guys

Like 2dogs, I don't push my TLA for the same reasons.  I know it will handle as much as I care to load but I have other guns for such work.   Ever so often  I do retrieve it from its nesting place for a rubdown and some dry firing.  I never tire of just looking at it, shod in Persinger ivories and  recalling  conversations with  Bill Grover at the time I ordered it.  Eventually, it will go to my son but not just yet.

Jim's #5 is a real beauty. Mine doesn't see a lot of action either for the same reasons.

But it's nice to have around to measure and try to copy like this flat top which needs a nicer hammer.

The one that Dave Clements makes would work in that one. I am trying to buy several OM Bisley hammers from him.

2 dogs, It started out as one of Clements hammers but since he wouldn't do a shotgun style trigger I sent the whole shabang to Andy Horrvath along with pics and asked him to put a TLA spur on it. Next time I guess I'll send my TLA hammer instead of pics.

Mr. Clements IS pretty busy. I sent him two sixguns to convert to Bisley and accurize last May. I hope to see them soon.

I wish I had one to use or even fondle.  Mine would have been K294, a .45 Colt with extra .45 ACP cylinder.  Paid for but never delivered, guess since I wasn't a gun writer or some one important Bill Grover felt it was safe to stesl my money without delivering the gun.

90north,

I had heard that people got stuck when the company went under, but you are the first one I've met to whom it happened.  I'm sorry for your loss, there.

I take mine hunting and killed a doe with it this year.  Unfortunately, the doe had more gas left in her after the shot than I would have though possible and made it in to a thicket where we never found her.  I'll try again next year.

My TLA #5 is my primary hunting gun and goes in the woods with me a lot.  I take care of it, but I don't baby it.  I would love to shoot 300 grainers out of it, but the front sight is too short and they shoot way high.  It is perfect with 240s, though, so I stick with them.

cubrock, stuck is not the word, I paid the deposit, waited 4 months, got a letter signed by Bill Grover himself that said your pistol is ready to ship as soon as you send the balance.  Sent the rest of the money, no pistol, no further contact.  Out and out fraud.

90north,

By stuck, I meant that people who had paid money for guns didn't get them when the company went under.  From what I understand, the company went into receivership and Bill Grover ejected from it before closing its doors.   I don't know how long it was in receivership, but it is possible that the fault for your not getting your gun is with his investors who ran the company in receivership and not with him personally.  Again, I don't know the details of how it all went down and those who do won't talk about it.  Regardless, I am sorry your money was taken from you.  That would tee me off, too. >:(

They are such nice sixguns. It is really too bad his business had to end up that way.
