We’re hunting caribou in Northern Quebec in September 2007. Will I need a passport to cross the border into Canada or back to the USA?

flying or driving?? If your flying, the U.S. gov't is requiring a passport to enter the u.s. as of jan 22/07. This applies to u.s. and foreign citizens. You will need a passport to re-enter the u.s. if flying. If driving, no passport is required. As I've said before on this site, the biggest problems americans face at the border is a past criminal history, as a charge that your country doesn't consider a felony, is considered one here. Also, don't forget to get your export permits in order before you leave the u.s. might also want to e-mail fish and game and find out if the ban on importing wild game is still in effect.

We’re driving to Montréal from there the outfitter charters a aircraft to fly up north.
We should be getting a packet early in 2007 with info. But just wanted to get a heads up on passports
We went into New Brunswick in 2005 and back into the US with just drivers licenses. But I’ve heard rumblings that in 2007 we’ll need passports. Thanks for the info and have a good New Years!

Don't take this as gospel but I was under the impression that Americans needed a passport for driving too. Also a past DWI will require you to get some special thing from Canda to enter also. As that is considered a felony to them.

due to very heavy pressure on congress from the govenors and congressman in states that border canada, the passport requirement for crossing into the u.s. by land has been pushed back to 2009. There is a commitee at work trying to find a viable and cheaper alternative to a passport, such as a border crossing card. It was feared that same day trips to the u.s. would drop by as much as 90%, which would really hurt the economy of towns that rely on canadian shoppers.

That’s good to hear, we have a camp and family a few miles from the New Brunswick border and much of their economy is able to function because of open borders with Canada.

i am 63 years old and still don't know why i will need a passport to go to a neighboring country ..at this day and age with all the software availible they can see right away if u have a criminal record .or if the law is searching for u ..[somebody is making money here] it is very sad that 2 countries that fought together and buried they're dead in the same grave come to this

the passport is not required to get into canada.... it is required to re-enter YOUR country. The 2 countries are not working together on this. This is your country's doing, and I applaud it.

i live in CANADA before when i used to go to the USA my drivers licence was sufficiant ..soon i will have to get a passport to get into the USA ...so i guess both countries want a passport now ...

no. american citizens do not need a passport to enter canada, but it is recommended. I'm not sure if your american or canadian?

i am canadian ..and i need a STUPID passport to get into the usa ..

I'm going to Ontario with a group of hunter in August. We will all be taking passports just because we already have them anyway. Isn't there another form that needs to be filled out before you leave the U.S. to get you and your guns back into the U.S.? I'm nervous about crossing the broder with rifles because I haven't done it before, but I've heard some reliable people say it's not that big of a deal. I just want to have all the paper work done and out of the way and right now I don't.

It does save time to have the paperwork all filled out when you reach the border. Go to www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca and select "forms." Then you will need to download form CAFC 909 the nonresident firearms declaration. It is a farily simple form where you can list up to three firearms complete with their caliber, barrel length, action type, and serial number. Fill this form out in triplicate and DO NOT SIGN it. At the border you will sign the form and pay a $25 fee. The agent may wish to inspect your firearms and check the serial numbers. You should have no problem. Good luck on your hunt, Rev

I also believe you have to stop at u.s. customs before you leave the u.s. as well. I know there are cites permits and fish and game permits you have to pick up... not sure of the specifics, maybe someone who's done it can chime in...

I just got back from Canada this weekend, I did not need a passport to get into or out of the US or Canada. But I did use mine because I had one. As far as firearms, I got a Customs Form 4457 from a US customs service.
The 4457 shows the guns were mine before I went into Canada and I had to show them to the US border agent. Going into Canada, I had to stop and fill out a NON- Resident Firearm Declaration form and give $25.00 dollars.

It was a painless process and only took about 5 minutes at each border crossing, I waited in line to drive into Canada longer than it took to fill out the form. LOL

You will also have to stop at the US border and register your game on a import form, another easy process. It is all done at the same time.

So you could actually just show up to the borders with no paper work with you and just fill it out there and not worry about it? Did I understand that correctly? I'm taking a couple guys this Saturday and the only thing I'm worried about is crossing the border.

Yes, I only had to give them my driver license and fill out the NON- Resident Firearm Declaration form to get into Canada, I also had to let them know where I was going and who was my outfitter. You can also get the NON- Resident Firearm Declaration on line at www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca. Just print it out and make a couple of copies and don't sign or date them tell the border agent tells you to. You can also get the form at the border. I found it to take less time to fill out the NON- Resident Firearm Declaration before hand. Also don't bring your guns into the building, leave them in your vehicle's. They never even asked to see my guns, either way. I did how ever get asked for my Customs Form 4457.

the biggest thing is to try and cross at a larger port of crossing that has alot of hunters crossing, or even alot of traffic. If you cross at bill's border crossing in the backwoods of Maine, your gonna have problems! All of the major Canadian crossings have experienced officers who do the firearms alot. Be forewarned.... there is alot of summer help at the borders now ( read snot nose kids.) Alot of them are on power trips, so just be friendly. They generally won't deal with the firearms stuff... I imported a shotgun for myself last week, and the punk at the booth gave me grief until I asked to speak to a supervisor. Problem solved.

We had no problems going into Canada and none coming back into the US with three trucks full of "bones" It went really smooth on both sides.
Stopped at the US side on the way over and registered all our firearms. Then at the Canadian border they checked most of the serial numbers and we paid the $25 for each rifle. On the way back all we had to do was show our drivers licenses, show the receipts for the rifles and fill out a form for the the caribou.
