What to Buy?
« on: December 26, 2006, 04:54:20 PM »
Santa was very good to me this Christmas and I got about $700 in gift cards from Cabelas.  I'm thinking of picking up some Encore rifle barrels, but can't make up my mind which to buy.  Here goes, 1) I have a Prohunter .243, 2) I have a .270 24" that came with the rifle, 3) I have a Weatherby MOA .308, and 4) a Remington 700 LVSF 7mm-08.  Basically hunting deer, pigs and whatever might happen by or get called up here in N. Texas.  So here is your chance to throw in your .02   ???

My choice would always be:

1.280 Remington

2. 7mm Wby Mag

....& if you don't like the Wby 308 MOA, I betcha' I got something to trade fer it.
....I saw miles & miles of Texas....

Here's my .02 of suggestions:

1. 45-70 barrel, since I don't see a big bore mentioned in your post.
2.  223 barrel, just because it's cheaper to shoot, and a good time.
3.  If you really have the bug for something different, take the 700 bucks, and pick up a Contender carbine in 30-30 or 7-30 Waters.  That should work for your N. Texas hunting needs inside 200 yards, maybe a bit more.

Whatever you get, I wish you well, and hope you get plenty of field time with it.

Regards

Mike

The 45-70 sure would make a nice addition.  A 338 or 375 H&H would also be a good addition.  ;D
