Need help-Brand new Muzzleloader

I ended up with a 50-cal Thompson thru some trading.Have never been around a muzzleloader.Its percussion cap.My 13 year old boy had some training in hunters ed.Our problem is we keep getting bullets stuck.How often can you shoot before total cleaning.Soap water etc.Is there a solvent that works after 1-3 shots? Useing Pyrodex. Is running a patch thru sufficient?I feel unconfortable pushing powder down the nipple to shoot out bullets i cant pull out.

Just a quick tip on getting out ,what I interperate to be , dry patched balls that you cant seat. Just pour a little water down the barrel and let it soak a couple  of minutes. This softens the powder fouling and will let you seat the bullett without the agony of trying to pull it, a teaspoon full is enough water. If you are using a dry patch to clean after a few shots, all that  does is to force the powder fouling down into the breech and plug up the flash hole  before the nipple. Pyrodex  is not a  round ball  friendly powder for most muzzle loaders.  I'd recommed  true blackpowder and not a bp substitute as true BP will ignite easier with reglar nipples and caps.  AS for everything else concerning lubes, cleaning, and storage lubes, just cruise this  web site and you'll get a lot of suggestions and receipes to try and tighten your groups. I did and it helps a lot    GOOD SHOOTIN and Have fun with your son!!

Jaycocreek, This is what I do when I shoot my muzzleloaders, before loading first round,I pop a couple of caps to get any oil out of flash channel, then I run a clean patch down the barrel, next I measure charge and pour it down the barrel,next I center a lubed patch over muzzle and center a ball on the patch. I start it down the barrel with a short starter, then seat it with my ramrod.Gun is now ready to fire as soon as I put a cap on. After shot, I take a clean patch put some #13 bore cleaner on and run down the barrel with my jag.Don't soak the patch just get it moist, wipe the barrel out and start the load procedure all over again.I wipe after each shot so I don't have a problem loading, :eek:  when u say your having a problem firing out bullets u can't pull out, do u push the bullet back down on the powder charge,never fire a charge with the projectile not seated on the powder charge, the barrel could explode. If u have a black powder range nearby stopin I'm sure someone there could give u a first hand demo on how to load ,wipe betwen shots, and clean the gun when your done shooting. have fun, stay safe. :wink:

Ok,.50 cal T/C what? Hawkin? Lot's of brass? Plastic stock?Twist?
Bullets? Maxi? Minnie? Or Sabots? Ball?
Lubed?

Thanks for asking here,cause there are plenty that can/will help, but you have blanket questions.
It's like sayin, "I have a 12ga. shotgun what should I shoot?"

You'll have a much better feel for how you should load, shoot and care for your rifle.  As you become more fimiliar with your rifle and the equipment (and jargon) commonly used, you will be able to ask more specific questions that folks will be glad to answer.
