Temporary fore end for Encore Virgin Valley barrel
« on: April 28, 2003, 10:20:26 AM »
:-)  I recently purchased a used VVCG 6.5x55 Swede barrel on Ebay but it came without fore arm.  The barrel has VV's proprietary hanger system so the standard T/C factory one I have from my .454 Casull won't fit.  It is going to be another 6 weeks before I get the custom one I have on order from Virgin Valley.  Short of a large sponge and a roll of duct tape, does anyone have any ideas for a temporary one, costing less than $10?  Responses saying to "make one yourself" are not welcome.

Go to the hardware store / home center and buy a 1"dowel at least 6" long ( or cut a small chunk from broomstick, or cut a chunk from a scrap 2x4).  Buy a screw(s) matching threaded holes in barrel.  Drill holes in dowel a bit larger than screw diameter, screw it on.  Should cost around $1 if you use an old dowel, or hunk of wood lying around, maybe $4 if you buy some wood.  Not pretty, but good enough to tie you over.  I hope this doesn't violate the "make it yourself" exclusion.

Good Luck, Bob

What about a method for keeping the hinge pin from drifting?  Would the duct tape with a piece of milk jug plastic over the actual ends of the pin to allow it to rotate suffice for the short term?  This setup would give new meaning to the word ugly.  As long as I can shoot it, who cares.  :P

Can you just take the forend adaptor off? I have a ( contender) Bullbarry barrel that came with an adaptor like the VV. I just took it off and used the normal forend

I've got a VVCG barrel, dovetail spacing is the same as any stock super 14" barrel. Used the 1 hole forend off my 10" barrel for a week or so until my factory 14" forend arrived. Spacing to the first hole is the same as the 10" barrel, but I found mounting it to the forward hole made it more comfortable to hold. If you've got any forend laying around, take the VVCG hanger off and use the old forend...by the way, if you turn the VVCG hanger around it's hole is in the same place as a pachmayr hanger system so you can use a pachmayr forend.
