Can't believe it, my 45-70 came in! Ordered and payed for it 10/18/06 but thanks to the hunting change in Mississippi nobody has had them. Don't know how my local gun shop found it but picking it up today at lunch. Have had everything ready to load ... 300 grain hp and cases. Got H4198, IMR 3031 and Varget (don't know how Varget will work) to try. Probably pick up some RL7 as well. This will be fun, of course I've got two more weekends of deer season left and only a hog to show for it so will be after Jan 7th before can get to the range.

Deer lease was flooded from storms Friday so stayed home and worked on this new rifle. Sanded and bedded the forend, filled the stock hollow with 54 cal round balls, added a 4x scope and cleaned the barrel (wasn't that much factory gunk in it). Took it to the range today with 20 handloads ... 300 grain Remington hollow points, 50 grains RL7 and CCI large rifle primers. Laser bore sighted it Friday night in the rain so only took 4 shots to get on center at 100 yards, then grouped 3 rounds about 1" high dead center. Love this rifle! Kicks about like my 30-06 but certainly not unpleasant. Much more accurate than I thought it would be with a 22" barrel and I did not notice unburned powder. Think I'll carry it on my final East Texas deer hunt next weekend.

Be sure you keep us posted on the results of the hunt and how the gun, caliber, and loads worked for you....<><....

Never hunted with them, but from what I've read, don't push the 300gr JHP much past factory speeds, as the bullets tend to open too rapidly, reducing penetration. From I've read about 1800fps seems about best.
Enjoy!

Hmmm, I have a ultra frame just itching for a new barrel. May have to be that new offering in 444 Marlin to go along with this 45-70.

The .444 would be somewhat of a duplicate with lighter bullets. I use 4759 from a Lee 2.8 dipper (equals 28.2 according to them, I get 28.5) (this is one of the few actual uses for dipper I have found), with a 400 gr. bullet. This chronos at 1530. 4759 comes in half pound cans and is high volume which reduces the air space. This is about all I can stand for recoil, so will stay with it.
