Savage Sierra?
« on: December 27, 2006, 05:58:09 AM »
looking at buying my 16 year old a deer rifle. he/we like the priceand size of the Savage Model 10FCM Sierra. we hunt the woods so we seldom shoot over 150 yards, but when opportunity knocks we want to be able to take one @ 250-350 yards.
it comes in,
243 low-recoil but not a lot of knock down
7mm-08 a step up from the 243, but stretching the shot concerns me
308 is what we are leaning towards, seems like what we are looking for
270/ 300 wsm  don't know a lot about either of these rounds, the 270 seems like a good option with great knockdown and distance. the 300 seems like a bit much on the deer, ears and shoulder.

any opinions or input would be appreciated.

HI
I would go with a diffrent model ??? so you could get it in a 30-06 ;D
a box of 06 bullets are $12.99 at walsmart. 300,270.7mm08,308 cost more

I love my 243 but I would not think about trying to  shoot a deer past 150 yards with it jmo I don't think it has the power.

I would go with the 308 if this is the type of gun that your son would like to have

I to would go for a 308 winchester. if you use the hornady light mags it will do as good as a 3006.

everyone should own at least one 30.06 or 308.  The Sierra is a light weight rifle so go with the 308.  Plus you can shoot surplus ammo and some cheap import stuff for practice.

If I were looking I would have bought the 7-08. I was looking through the discount book at the local Wall Mart last nite and the had a mod 10 for $ 200, new. I had to get out of there fast or it would have followed me home, several gun have done that and I just hate it.  ;)
