L.C. Smith shotgun assembly/disassambly help
« on: December 27, 2006, 02:37:39 PM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently had a L.C. Smith 12ga. Field grade SxS choked skt/skt. follow me home.  It was probably made around 1930 according to serial no. research and the stock was repaired(nicely done) reciever may have been re-cased,not sure.  Anyway the gun is a fine looking shotgun that I think I got for a fair price.  I would like to take it apart to inspect the parts and give it a good cleaning/re-lube.  I do this with all the strays that follow me home. I have taken other SxS guns apart for this purpose with no problem, this one seems a little different.(want to avoid aggravation)  Any leads on exploded assemblies or assembly instructions would be appreciated.  Thanks,  Walt

Hey there Walt, I have what you're looking for here. I have the assembly/dissasembly instructions and also the exploded view with parts numbers listed. I have it in a book I have here.

If you want me to, I can scan the pages for you and e-mail it to you.  Post your e-mail address for me here and I will check back to get it, and if you want me to send you the pages I will then scan them and send them for ya, ok. Just let me know here.  ;D ;)

I've put a link to an exploded diagram below. The LC can be a bit difficult to re-assemble but it's easy with a little trick. If you look at the drawing the 'V' spring that powers the top lever and the bolt(#24) will push the top lever (#9) very hard to the side. This will make installing the trigger plate (#54) difficult as the stems bottom pivot won't want to enter it's hole in the trigger plate. Using a msall section of coat hanger sized wire bend a 90 degree bend that creates a small leg on one end. This is inserted into the recess for the spring with the lever pressed to the right and held there while the lever is released. This will keep the spring from contacting the top lever spring cam and the top levers stem will be fairly loose..and easily fitted into the hole in the trigger plate. The butt stock is off course installed before the trigger plate and to do that and allow the trigger plates easy installeation a tiny notch is cut in the face of the butt stocks action inlet near the center of the left lock inletting. When the lock is installed the tiny notch is completely covered. When the trigger plate installation is finished the top lever is pushed to the right freeing the small wire which is then carefully removed. Another note is that be very careful of cracks in the butt stock. They are quite common as the LC has a very small area which actually contacts the rear of the action and thus conducts the recoil impulse to the butt plate. Compression is almost inevitable and spitting will likely follow.. Relieving things a bit can sometimes postpone the spitting. The recoil should never be transmitted via the tang screws or the tangs themselves..
