Leaving for deer lease tommorrow
« on: December 27, 2006, 05:21:16 PM »
Finally got clear of the holidays to get down into some serious deer hunting. I am taking my BLR in 358 win., loaded with 47.0 grains of IMR 3031 under Remington 200 grain coreloct RN's. I am also taking "Ugly" my weatherproof 7x57 loaded with 150 grain combined Tech. Ballistic tips pushed to 2700 fps using H414. This is a deer killing trip as opposed to looking for the big one as time is getting short. Weather will be cold, wet and windy. Looks good to me. The 358 will be the main rifle with the 7x57 being back up or really nasty weather rifle. Will report on bullet performance depending on success.

Where are you headed?  Good luck, I know how it is near teh end of the season just looking for meat.  This years regular season had warm weather and the deer were not moving.  My son got one and I got skunked.  I did get a doe during the muzzle loader season so the freezer is full.

Well it was real rainy and cold the first two days but yesterday I took three deer, a spike and two does all with the 358. Perfect performance from both rifle and ammo. One bullet penetrated more than 20 inches of deer and still exited. In fact all the 200 grain corelokts made exit holes. All three deer either dropped or went less than 20 yards.

It sure is! Along with the feral hog I took a month ago and the fish I caught last year not to mention some of the deer left over from last year.  I am giving some deer and hog to some friends so I can participate in the coming hog hunting. I put up a new feeder while I was there and may go out next weekend to see if it is working properly. Man what a day saturday was. Watched the sun come up, shot three deer, hung all three and cleaned them, set up a feeder and hog/cow proofed it hopefully, loaded up, took the deer to a locker to be chilled along with driving a bit over 4 hours. Yesterday all I did was cut up and package the three deer and drink too much. Happy new year!

What an end to a year.  I have some deer left over from last year (actually05 now) along with the two we put in for 06.  I plan on doing a hog hunt after the first of the year also.  I will probably be around Hemphill TX in Mid February if things work right with some friends in Beaumont.

My lease is north of Guthrie Texas in King county.  My hunting buddy wants to go back this coming weekend. Oh well I have plenty of ammo.

What firearm are you using on the deer?
