How do I get started with Handi-Rifles?
« on: December 27, 2006, 11:12:47 PM »
What's the best way to get into Handi-Rifles?  Which is the best model with the most selections?  How tough is it to get new barrels?

ARe there any aftermarket barrels or gunsmiths who work on them?

Any help appreciated. Thanx

Personally I recomend a "Ultra" model with nice, tough laminated stocks on them. These models usually are a tad bit nicer finish and have a pretty good trigger right out of the box. Not to mention that the laminated stocks are very easy to work with (as is regular wood)  in case you have a few bumps in the road with accuracy and need a little tuning.
You are mainly looking for an up to date SB-2 receiver..in other words a centerfire strong receiver. More on this in the FAQs.
Getting new barrels fitted is very easy. Just wrap and box up the receiver and include the barrel # you are want and either MO or Credit Card info. You can also phone this in I believe. Info is here:

After market barrels.. not ones that you can buy straight out without fitting. You can also buy used barrels. These sometimes need fitting, some will lockup fine.  But there are smiths that sell worked barrels and in different calibers. And more and more smiths are working on them as they are a simple design. I'll let more here delve into that as many have their own preference.

I might get beat down on this one but I would recommend a .223 with a bull barrel as a starter. I do not know if you own other rifles or what their calibers might be. I do not know what you might use your new Handi for but if it is just a starter rifle, then I will stand by the .223. This rifle is a dandy.

bigjeepman makes a great suggestion, the .223 is a great round to start with in the centerfires and the Bull barrel is a great way to go. As far as the Ultra, perhaps the Ultra Varmint in .223,  nice, a bit more money, probably worth it, but not neccessary....<><.... :)

I also would recomend you start with an Ultra in .223 .It seems to have been the first Handy for many of us here. Ammunition is readily available and realitively inexpensive. They can be made to be terrificaly accurate with a little patience and some simple modifications found in the FAQ's.And ther are plenty of knowledgeable people here to give you any support or help you may need.
The accessory barrel program gives you a wide variety to choose from ,and a list of available calibers is available on the H&R NEF website under the heading Customer Support.
But be forewarned the, rifles can soon become an addiction for which there is no cure.

I suggest the best way to "get into Handi's" is to read the FAQ's at the top of the page first...This way..you will know what to do to get which ever one you purchase shooting accurately from the start...

Second...I too would buy a Ultra...and it wouldn't be a 223...it would be a 25-06 or a 280...These 2 barrels from the get go would serve you well for just about anything you wanted to hunt for in this country...Yes...it does recoil more than a 223...but the 223 isn't a big game rifle...it is a varmint & target rifle..which can if pressed into service do ok for whitetails up close...The 25-06 can very easily do any varmints much further than the 223...and any deer long range as well...plus they are more than accurate when properly tuned(rifle & ammo) to suffice off the bench...

Third...there are plenty of gunsmiths that will "work" on your Handi..some...will go as far as cutting off your existing barrel and "stubbing " it for a new barrel to be threaded into it...others will re bore your existing one and make it into a new caliber that way...It isn't tough to get most barrels that NEF offers...some they have less of and may take a few weeks longer..especially if they are doing a limited run for one of their large distributors..Most of the time with the exception to holidays and just prior to hunting season..you can expect a less than 4 week turn around..

Good luck and as has already been said...Once you start with them...it's difficult to stop..

Thanks for all the great replies.

As for the .223, I should have mentioned that I am new to Handi-rifles, not new to shooting.   I'm interested in such Handi-Rifle calibers as the .357 magnum and very interested in the 35 Whelen.  I have no need for the .223.

I'm a little confused about which models are available for which calibers.  On the NEF website, they show different barrels for the Ultra Hunter than for the plain vanilla "handi-rifle".  Personally I like the Ultra, but the  caliber options seem to be very limited for that model.

Does anyone know if it is possible to rechamber the Handi-Rifle for AI calibers?  If so, who does this kind of work?

I have a .280 Imp-Imp Handi, although it has the straight case and 40º shoulder of an Ackley,  it's not an Ackley since factory ammo can't be fired in it. If your gunsmith can ream the chamber to include the 40º shoulder without changing the neck shoulder juncture which sets headspace, then factory ammo might work in it, but I don't know that anyone has had that done.

My smith, Wayne York of Oregunsmithing, reamed it to the traditional chamber depth, but since the barrel can't be set back  as in a bolt gun, this ends up being an improved-improved, case capacity for a normal .280AI is 73.4grs water, my case hold 74.3gr water. I use Nosler Custom 280AI brass, when I drop one into the chamber, there's about .030"-.050" headspace!

He does this a lot for hunters in Alaska that want all the case capacity they can get in their 35 Whelen bolt guns.

To get around that, I have to create a false shoulder on the neck that eliminates the headspace, then fire form with start loads. I also loaded .005" into the lands to make sure the case didn't get pushed forward any at the pin strike. I also greased the case to allow it to slide completely to the rear so there's no case stretching, just in case. I did 50 rounds with no anomalies. Then reload as normal using a neck sizing die set and a body die if needed.

I have done the same thing with standard brass, forming a false shoulder is easy, use a .308" neck expander to enlarge the neck, then partial resize the neck to .284" just enough to eliminate the excess headspace and then fire form with full pressure start loads.

I forgot to answer your question about the barrels. Any barrel on the acc list cept the 10ga and 12ga Slug barrels, can be fitted to a Handi frame or Ultra frame, they're both the same, so if you get an Ultra, the Handi barrels can be fitted to it, or vice versa.

What are you planning on doing with your Handi Rifle?  I love my .30-30, and for deer hunting it's perfect IMO.  I you read the post on this forum, it seems like the rimless cartridges give more trouble than the cartridges with rims.  I wish NEF would make a run of .30-40 Krag barrels.

The .357 is a great cartridge, and I also like the .45-70.  It just depends on what you plan on using it for.
