rem 722 not ejecting
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:10:24 AM »
I have a remington 722, 257 roberts,  the bolt won't throw the empties clear of the chamber.  I think either my bolt is gunked up inside, or my spring is broken.  Could someone tell me the procedure for dismanteling the bolt so that I could hopefully find the problem or is this something for a smith.  Thanks for your help

That ejector consistists of a round plunger driven by a spring.  Both are contained in the bolt body.  Failure to eject is is usually because the spring or plunger is rusted or oil gunked in place, as you suspect.   It is fairly easy to disassemble a Rem bolt bit it's not easy to discribe without photos or drawings.  There are several old NRA and Gun Digest disassembly books on the market, perhaps you can find one at a gun show or ebay.

If it is just old, hardened oil gunk, as a quick fix you may want to try soaking the bolt in mineral spirits to see if you can dissolve the sticky stuff.  Pushing in on the ejector occasionally as it soaks will help break up, loosen and float the dried goo out faster.  Cheap spray-on "brake cleaner" works really good too.

If it is rust (or if the spring is broken, but that's unlikely) you have a more difficult problem.  You really need to take the ejector out to remove rust from the parts and their hole so maybe it would be worth the cost of having a gunsmith take a look at it.

You  have a jewel of a deer cartridge in that old rifle!

The Remington 722-721 were the proto types for the current M700(short action/long action). I have several and believe they were better fitted than their modern counter parts. I have 4 M722's, 3 222Rem's, a 244Rem( later called the 6mmRem) and a 270 custom on the 721 action, if I ever get it done!! As to the ejector it is also possible the extractor is not holding the case until it clears the opening in the action(ejection port). The link below should take you to an excellant sight with a parts diagram. The ejector is part number 12, it's spring is number 13 and the pin that needs to be driven out to release the ejector and spring is part number 14,. The extractor is shown as part number 11. Be very careful as the ejector is under fairly heavy spring tension and there are many of them scattered over gunsmiths shops all over this country.. The ejector must be lightly compressed and the pin driven outward until it clears the ejector, allowing it to move forward out of it hole in the bolt face. When re-installing the ejector the notch must be aligned to allow the retention pin to be inserted and the ejector must move freely.. Good luck and be careful..
