Motion Decoy
« on: December 28, 2006, 03:58:24 AM »
Was looking at the motion decoys at Cabelas the other day and got the idea of making one from a quivering decoy that you throw in your duck decoy spread.  Basically just a round plastic housing with a counter-weight that spins. Was wondering if anyone has tried this or have made any similar decoys w/ motion.  I was thinking of gluing some type of oval shaped contraption on the bottom of the quivering decoy then placing that on a rod thats stuck into the ground so it would wobble around.

I also got a new electronic call, an Extreme Demensions Pro Series Wireless.  Wondering if anyone has used this model.  It says it is effective up to 200yds from the remote.

I think that you would do well to make your own. When I think of Cabelas, that rigor rabbit comes to mind and it recieved poor review here for the overall preformance compared to the price. That one did not even have a shutoff (at that time) and the user had to pull the battery. Movement was reported to be Very Subtle.

The oval shaped contraption that you need for your homemade could very well be a pipe hanger that you might find at Home depot, Menards, or Lowes.
I have a 6" that is bolted to the base of my decoy but you can find these in 4"-3" & smaller. The pipehanger will accept a short piece of allthread that you can just stick into the ground.
The crossmember bolt is removed completley and your mounting holes are there.
Good luck to you, Yours is a worthwhile project.

If still interested, Buckskin, I have made a decoy with the quiver magnet like you are talking about.  A took some electrical tape and wrapped around the sides of it a couple of wraps and then just started to attach feathers as I was wrapping, leaving the power button exposed of course.  It kinda looked like an Indian headdress if that will help you imagine it so to speak.  All I do is attach a length of decoy cord to it and hang it off of a limb or even better a strand of barbed wire in a fence.  It definately looks good and is cheap.  The crows will not leave it alone and I have had them dive bomb it.  Even had the hawks after it on more than one occasion.  Best thing is, you can add feathers or whatever if it loses some for little or no effort.  Battery life seems good too.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Pickwick!  I've been mulling this around in my head of how to do it quietly.  The other ideas that I've thought of have been a bit noisy, but your idea will work great.  Brilliantly simple!!!

I use a toy called the rascal.  It costs $5 at the toy store, you drill a hole in the bottom, and run the spring hook inside of it and use gorilla glue to secure it.  Use a wooden dow rod and you can pick how much action you want by sliding the spring up or down the dow rod.  It is a round ball that takes a AA battery and has a off center weight that spins inside the ball.  It has a critter attached to it that looks like a racoon tail with eyes.
Cheap but effective.  the tail swinging around in such an irratic way definately draws a predators attention.
You can also put your turkey decoy on top of it to get some action out of it when turkey hunting.

I've picked several weasel balls up at cracker barrel, just a thought, maybe one near you has one. The flea markets usually have them but they are usuallt twice as much. When the little tail gets attaked to many times you can glue panty hose to it.

hey varmintbob I got the weasel ball, but the thing is kinda noisy. How do you hook it up to the dowel rod- a picture might help.

I drilled a hole in the bottom, wound the spring into the hole, and used gorilla glue on the inside and outside to secure the spring.  Slide the spring over the dow rod end, and secure it with a screw on the end of the spring hook.  The more the spring sticks up off of the rod the more action it has.  If this does not work for you I will post a picture.

bob I am a visual learner a pic would be great.
on another forum they talked about discarding the top half of the ball and posting the motor half on a steel rod. taking the weight off the motor it lets the motor spin inside the ball half and you attach the weasel to the motor. the idea is to let the weasel spin around the ball half.  looked good on a video of it. see this on http://video.tinypic.com/player.php?v=4de3srt
this was originally on the varmintal.com web site.

Thanks so much Bob that really helped.  I think I will try to do something similar with mine looks easy enough.
My modification didn't work out too well- I put an eyehook into the top half of the ball (orange half) and connected that to a ballbearing swivel like you use for fishing. Then I hung the unit from an L-shaped metal rod so that the ball hangs from it.  The problem is the ball motor quits for some unknown reason in that hanging position, actually the motor engages but the weight does not spin when its in that vertical hanging position for some reason? :-\ Maybe I just got a defective one?
