S&W model 547 9mm revolver
«

I have become interested in finding a S&W model 547 revolver in 9mm. My intended purpose for this pistol would be IDPA competition. Question: Does this gun use full moon clips for the 9mm ammo, and if so are full moon clips available? Any info from those who have used this model will be appreciated.

no it will not take moon clips. It has a special extractor system that pops the cases out.

That revolver uses speed loaders and they are available for that particular gun. On review I read about that revolver, in sunub nosed form, was that it was just like shooting a 38 snubbie and the author of the article liked the fact that the shape of the bullet nose on most 9mms aided in quick reloads. IMshooter,
Allthough the books list the M547 as being made from 1980-1985, due to problems, the general production run of this gun did not begin until 1983 starting with s/n 6D and ended in 1984. Research indicates about 10,270 units were made. The 3" is a RB while the 4" is SB. You don't see either very often and when you do be ready to shell out some dough.
Here's a picture of my 3" which is a prototype of 140 pcs made in 1980 in the s/n range of 5d590XX.

Those are nice looking grips. What kind of wood is it?

IMshooter,
The grips are Birdseye Maple by Craig Spegel.

IIRC, the SW547 owes its existance to France. IIRC, France's national police force placed an order for a 9MM revolver and S&W got the contract....but the 'deal' fell through due, I think, to a switch to Beretta 92Gs.
