Hornady Leverution Bullets Available for Handloading Soon?
« on: December 28, 2006, 04:44:21 AM »
I was just wondering if anybody had heard through the grape vine if Hornady would be selling their Leverution bullets for handloading?

I've not heard anything on the vine, but a call to Hornady would probably work. I've found these guys very easy to deal with over time.

I wouldn't expect it to happen any time soon.  The demand for the loaded rounds has been very high and they probably don't have a surplus of bullets.

They also may not sell them for safety reasons.   Someone else in the forum found that the primer they use is harder than standard primers (wouldn't fire in his modified rifle, while standard primers did).  Hornady has extensively tested their design and configuration of the finished round, but can't test the infinite varieties of configurations that home reloaders may come up with.

Other than the primer, I don't see what the difference would be than any other load that you could produce at home.
I think they will keep them as rounds for a while, due to the fact that there are no others like it.  So if you want it you must buy it as they see fit.

I have been told that the brass to make levereveloution rounds is much shorter than standard.  I read somewhere that the 444 is 5/16 of an inch shorter.  Have never seen any myself but I could ask my son he bought some for his 35 Marlin.

It would make no sense to shorten the already-short neck of the .35 Remington - I doubt it would even hold a bullet if shortened by 5/16".   .444 brass that is 0.313" shorter?  Why?  Hornady is a member of SAAMI and would have to adhere to the dimensional standards that other members do.   I cannot believe the brass is materially shorter than the SAAMI standard.

It is though, at least with the 450 & 45-70, I have them sitting side by side at my computer, I hear the 444 is the same way, I have not compared the 35REM. The pointed bullets obviously have to be considerably longer than a flat nose of the same weight, when you factor in the syn. tip which weighs very little, the bullet gets even longer. So, with the 325gr as in the 45-70, this is a long bullet. The overall length is a critical factor, otherwise the round will not cycle into the chamber. So, they had to shorten the case, still long enough for a stiff charge of the powder they use, ( may be special powder) but short enough to cycle.

And for that reason, I don't see them offering bullets only. If you use the std case, the loaded round would be too long. They cannot offer a second crimping groove, the groove is just off the ogive now! Look's like they are in  abox for offering these components.

I have not personally checked the brass length.  I am only passing on what I have read.  As far as adherring to sammi specs. I think as long as the headspace is adhered to they are ok.

Headspace & overall case length so that rounds will feed in any factory magazine.

..and your explanation makes perfect sense, I had not considered the bullet ogive on these pointed bullets.  Still, shorten the neck on the .35 Remington and the bullet will fall into the case due to inadequate neck grip.  But there is no need  to shorten the .35 neck for pointed bullets, they are already loaded into factory ammo - and have been for many decades.

I E-Mailed Hornady back in Nov. to see when these new bullets would be available to us handloaders. I still have not heard back from them. I guess I'll have to call them.

Yeah, I checked a half a dozed fired rounds for 45/70. They are a bit short. Anywhere from 2.025 to 2.035.
