Bought a new '06

Today I ordered my first handi rifle in 30-06 , I plan on going on an elk hunt in the fall of '07 and it is what i am going to take with me , I was going to get a 270 but I already have a 270 in a bolt gun so I dont really need 2. It is the blued with the synthetic stocks and I plan on mounting a Leupold 3-9 Rifleman scope on it , do you guys think this would be a good set up?

Congrats on the new rifle...I think it will be a real nice set up for ya...Let us know how it shoots when you get it..and don't forget to clean it real good before heading out to the range...Check the FAQ's on how we prep them...

Best choice in my openion.  Now you're set for everything in North Americia.

Now for bullets, I favor the Nosler Partition in 165gr myself, but other bullets that do well is the Sierria 165 BT, and the 165gr Nosler Accubond.  If you feel the shot will be close, no more than 250 yards the Nosler 180 would be the optamum bullet.  The velocity and range lost with anything heavier is not worth the added weight of the bullet.

Congrats on the new Handi!! I've got 2 '06s, a SS Handi and an Ultracomp, the SS shoots 150gr Fusion very well, moa or better at a little over 3000fps, a great choice for deer. ;)

I have the same rifle that I use on SC deer. I use 150 grain Winchester Power Points, cheap, and they do the job for me. I especially like the length. Great in the smaller stands I hunt in. Mine will shoot 1 -1/2" with the PP's. Never had a problem with mine. You won't be disappointed. Good choice.

I love it ;). It shot good right out of the box so I haven't done any of the accurizing tips ;D. The only ammo I've used is Remington Express Core-Lokt PSP 150gr from Wal-Mart.

Nice choice, I think you will like it. If you will be hunting on foot, you can lighten the rifle about 3/4 lb by taking the metal weight out of the stock (remove the recoil pad to get at it). I've got a Weaver 2.5X on mine and the total weight is just a little over 7 pounds, about the same as a bolt mountain rifle and the recoil is not bad. As others have mentioned, the Nosler Partition 180 gr bullet works good. Enjoy your new handi!

Buckmaster my dad had one which i got to shoot alot, of all the ammo he tried it shot best with Remington 150 and 180 PSPCL bullets and when i used it i had two pet loads for it . With rem 150 pspcl i used IMR4350-59.0 grains and with the 180 pspcl IMR4350-- 57.0 grains. This rifle was more accurate then my remington model 700BDL. Good luck with it.Just my opinion  for Elk i would go with the 180's
