Help ID Stevens
« on: December 28, 2006, 07:30:20 AM »
I have an old Steven's Favorite.  I don't know a great deal about them.  This one has an aprx. 24 in. barrel.  6 inches towards the recevier end is octagon.  The barrel is marked:  J Stevens Arms & Tool Co.  Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A.  The receiver is marked: Trade Mark, FAVORITE, U.S. Pat Off & Fgn.  On the bottom tang:   M 5XX  The barrel removal screw is sort of a D ring affair.  Any ideas on the Model of this old rifle?

The Favorites were made with different frames as time went on and there are many variations within these frame types (usually minor-most to keep the lever from drooping).  The different models varied mostly by what kind of sights were supplied.  The standard "model" with the part octagon barrel and with a plain elevation adjustable rear sight and blade front was the Model 17.  The numbers on the lower tang are not serial numbers (no one is sure as all the records were destroyed in a fire) more probably an assembly number.  Model numbers were never marked on the rifles, you needed  (now as well as then ) a catalog or several catalogs for the model number.  Hope this helps.  It can get a little comlicated.  2520
