That would depend a lot on the scope, some scopes with larger power rings and ocular bells can't be mounted with less than high rings. Of course high rings in one brand are close to the same height as medium rings in another brand. Burris Signature Zee highs are .420" from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube,  mediums are .270". I really wish they made the Sig Zees in low, but they don't. :-\

Leupold medium QRW's...This is my VX-1 4x12x40 sitting in them on my 338-06 A-Square..

I would also rate the Warne's right along side these as well...

Mac,

Would a VX-2 4-12x50 fit with those rings on a 30-06 barrel?

Thanks,
David

A 50mm scope isn't normally a problem, the hammer clearance is. The scope in the pic is a 6.5-20x50 Whitetail Classic mounted in medium Burris Signature Zee rings, there's just clearance for the hammer with the use of a hammer extension, plenty of clearance at the barrel.

They should...the only difference between the VX-1 & the VX-2 is the eye piece is .1" longer than the VX-1...the diameter is the same at 1.6"..and the rear spacing is the same as well at 2.2"....http://www.leupold.com/products/products_specs.asp

Here's an example of a scope that would normally need high or even extra high rings if the hammer is left unmodified, but with a little dremel work on the hammer, this scope can be mounted in medium rings.

Here's a couple examples of scopes that have a small power ring that allows the scope to be mounted in low Leupold PRW rings without any hammer modification.

 EDIT Jan 2009

I finally tried some Warne MAXIMA rings with Tim's prompting. They fit perfectly with just a bit more room at the hammer than my beloved PRW's have. No other changes made. Here is a pic. Its a Leupold VXII Scope on a H&R Ultra base.

The high Weaver Quad-Locs are very nice and inexpensive.  That's all I use on my Handis.

I have to apologise for the delay in responding as I said I would.... I plum forgot!!

Here is a run down of all the WEAVER STYLE bases for the H&R NEF firearms and muzzle loaders...

Greg and Nomo, I think this is what your looking for, Its a WEAVER one piece base #60A and is shown to be available from Midway, Natchez and Mid-south. Its listed as being made to fit the H&R 158. Fits current barrels with radius adjustment, holes same.

As most know the WEAVER #82 base is STD for the H&R/NEF rifles.(But a tad long with rear slot too far forward and too far apart for most scopes)

Leupold is offering one in its "RIFLEMAN" line and its listed as fitting the HUNTSMAN and SIDEKICK Muzzle loaders. (They are drilled and tapped the same as all NEF/H&R barrels)

H&R/NEF factory offers two different bases, one reg and one ULTRA. Basically the ULTRA is bit longer and has a front "support" screw. Both offer multiple slots for different scope fitment. Either would be my first choice until someone makes a STEEL BASE that is.

I hope this is what you guys where looking for..

Hmmmm, I'll have to check out the Durasight and Warne bases, maybe they can be modifiied, depends on the radius of the barrel.

Question for all you quick release users.

I lap all my rings once mounted to the base.  Then I attach the scope.  I am not confident the lapping would have been the same on all rifles and bases.  So when you move the scope/rings to another rifle/base, have you accomplished anything by lapping?

I am going to move some scopes around and initially was going to bring the rings with the scope, but decided to keep the rings with the rifle/base.

I use Warne Med on my Bull .308.  I think these are the best rings made.  Steel with double locks on top and on base.  I have never seen a stronger lock up.  When it comes to firearms, stronger is better.

I am new to this site, and I am new to handi rifles...I need your help and this appears to be a good place to start.

I recently purchased a .444 handi rifle and a Leupold 3-9X40 Vari XII scope.  I am trying to decide what base and rings to use. Questions:
1) what is the base that came with the gun: aluminum or steel?
2) Do you think loctite or something similar was used when the base was installed with the rifle?
3) if it is aluminum, should I get a steel base?
4) what type of rings should I get: steel or aluminum?  Is it ok to put aluminum Leupold rifleman rings on the factory installed base?
5) what height of rings do I need?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to GBO! All bases for the Handi are aluminum except the Warne bases.

Green or purple loctite should be used, blue can too, but it requires heat to remove the screws, finger nail polish will work too.

Lots of folks like the Rifleman rings, they're an economical ring that are sold at Walmart, very popular.

Aluminum or steel, your choice, both work. ;)

Depends on the scope, I'd say you can get by with mediums on the Leupy, the small power ring and tapered ocular bell helps, doesn't matter about the objective size, plenty of barrel clearance..

Be sure to spend some time in the FAQs and Help sticky, there's an answer in there for 99% of your questions because someone before you has asked. ;)

Please excuse my ignorance, but is their a search tool for this site?  I have been poking around at different links, etc, but it has been very slow.  I found some of the information on mounting scopes, but couldn't find some of the answers you gave me...thanks for that.

Do you think the base was installed with loctite?  I don't want to mess with it if it was, I read about others breaking/stripping the screws.

Do you think the heavy recoil from this gun is too much for the aluminum rings and screws?

H&R uses a thread locker usually, but they don't make sure the base fits the barrel well, so I recommend it be properly mounted, see the link in the FAQs on bedding the scope rail. Use a little heat on the screws and they come right out, I replace the hex head screws that come in the base with torx screws from Brownell's.

The .444 doesn't have heavy recoil, it's about the same or a tad heavier than a 30-06, I've shot several loads from 240gr XTPs to 355gr cast bullets in mine up to near max levels, have never noticed the recoil to be anything to be concerned about, I put Limbsavers on all my heavy recoil H&Rs, the .444 still has the factory pad. Even if you go to levergun loads and above in a 45-70 H&R or any factory load in the 500 S&W Handi, the factory base and any good rings work fine, I've used Burris Signature Zee(steel) and Leupold QRW/PRWs(aluminum) on heavy kicking H&Rs with no problems, those loads would be 300gr @ 2400+fps in the 45-70, and 350gr at 2150fps and 700gr @ 1400+fps in the .500, any of these has a lot more recoil that you'll get in the .444. ;)

I just recently added the Durasight rings to two of my barrels. They fit perfect I did not need any hammer clearance and they also fit my 44mm scope.

CVA Durasight™ Z2 Alloy Scope Base and Medium Ring Set are the ones I used. It came with a base but I did not need it.

http://www.cabelas.com/spod-1/0041180.shtml

I bought mine at BPS.

Tim,

I just used the Nef scope base. They fit fine.

I can take a picture if you would like to see how it fits.
