winchester highwall in 223
« on: December 28, 2006, 04:13:49 PM »
I have been looking at different 223 cal rifles for about 6 months I think the highwall maybe the right choice for me. I currently have a ruger #1 in 25-06 beautyfull rifle and shoots excellent. This time though I have settled on the new high wall I know they make alot of hot rod new short mag calibers in this but I think the 223 is best for my needs (mostly varmit rifle) Some times I get a little lazey hand loadiing so a box of factory braass can be picked up cheaply. Does anyone own one of these rifles yet?  I was on winchesters web sight for the last two nights reading up on the two new calibers they are listing 22-250 and 223. If you do own one how is your acuracy in it? I am planning on putting a leupold 4 to 12 on it. or if I can aford it possibly a kales 3.5 to 10 I was wondering about the eye relief of this rifle compared to the ruger #1 which is slightly longer in eye relief. I have a 3 to 9 leupold on my ruger, Should I mate this rifle with one of the short mag scopes they have 1" longer eye relief. Ok that's enough questions lets have some feed back

I'm not betting money on it but I don't think the highwall was made in .223 so you'd have to buy one and rebarrel it, a VERY expensive way to get one. Or just buy a .223 Low wall, they are super accurate.

It celebrates 100 years of the timeless 30-06 Springfield cartridge with special engraving and an inlaid medallion on the right side of the receiver. It has a free-floating 28” full octagon barrel and a trim, satin finished checkered walnut stock fitted with a premier Pachmayr® Decelerator® recoil pad. Its sidekick, the Model 1885 Low Wall is available for 2006 in the 17 Mach 2 rimfd paste right off Winchesters sight.

My local Gander Mtn had the 223 and 22/250 on sale for $799. I almost put one on my Gander mtn charge card!
I have more varmint rifles than I will ever need and this one time common sense took over

Ah new for this year. I really haven't gone to either the Browning or Winchester sites looking to see what they will be offering for 2007. Was just going on what had been offered in the past. If you want one I'd suggest snapping it up quickly. The last time they offered the HWs they sold so poorly they were discontinued, I'm sure the same will happen again this time.

Personally, I think it's the right combination ... .223 in a HiWall.  I had a Browning LoWall  in .223 and foolishly sold it; but then I always liked the looks of the HiWall better (even though it's quite a bit heavier than the LoWall).  Also, the recent Winchester 1885s have much more "plain Jane" wood than the Brownings.
I've never seen one in the flesh, but I've seen a catalog listing for a Browning B-78 in .223.  Now THAT's a gun I'd like to own.

The 1885 Hi Wall in .223 is not a new offering for 2007, it has been out for over a year now, and they've been selling like hotcakes all year on Gunbroker.com for $800. They are in the Traditional Hunter model of the 1885.
