Scope for a .25-06
« on: December 29, 2006, 08:17:07 AM »
Would like some suggestions for a scope for a Tikka T3 Lite in .25-06.  I really like the looks of the Nikon Monarch.

Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm or 3-9x40mm.

Leupold VXIII 3.5 X 10 X 40 great for longer distances and up close.

My son has a varix III 2.5x8 and a Nikon Monarch 3x9. He likes the 3x9 Nikon better but rates his Leupold M8 6x42 equal to the Nikon. There seem to be two camps concerning the Leupold standard duplex reticle, either love them or dislike them. I dislike them as they're too thin for me. My son's Christmas gift this year is a post & duplex reticle from the Leupold custom shop for his 2.5x8. You have a lightweight rifle so paying attention to scope weights would be something to consider. Burris, Pentax, & Bushnell Elite 4200 series scopes are heavy.

A scope for a center fire rifle is not a function of the rifle caliber. It'a a function of the terrain you are going to hunt. If hunting in thick wooded areas a low mag fixed scope may be the way to go. If the terrain is more open with longer shots (over 200 yds) probable, a 4X12 may be the correct selection. A good scope to work fine in most hunting terrains would be 3X940mm.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

At the moment, Midway USA has a good deal on some of the Nikon Monarchs.  The 3-9X40mm is on sale for 229.95.  the 4-12 and 6-24 are also on sale.  I don't know if this fits with what you want out of a scope, but I've got a Nikon Buckmaster I'm very happy with and I hear good things about the presumably better, Monarch line of scopes.  I think at least 2 of the sale scopes have the new BDC reticle on them.  I haven't tried it so I can't say much about that.

I've got a Burris FFII 4.5-14X42mm on my .25-06.  I'm very pleased with it, though I see where John has indicated they've had more returns than usual on Burris scopes of late.  Granted, it's more magnification than I need for hunting, but I did shoot a doe from a solid rest this fall.  I was able to take my time and dialed the scope up to about 12X for the 200 yard shot.  I generally leave it at 4.5X for hunting, but I like to zoom in when the opportunity presents itself.  And I like to zoom in for punching holes in paper.  I shoot a lot more paper than I do deer.

Well, I ordered a Nikon Monarch from the Optic Zone, which gave me great service by the way.

I'm sure you will be pleased. A great scope for the price. ;)

cool
I have a Monarch 4-12 on my Sako 243
great scope
I don't "need" the 12 power for most of my hunting, but it's nice to have when you do need it
