454 Casull barrel for G2?
« on: December 30, 2006, 07:37:42 AM »
I looked in the T/C catalogue and could not find a 454 Casull barrel for the G2.  Is there another outfit that makes barrels for the G2?  If not, is it feasible to have a 44 mag barrel recut for the 454?

NO NO NO. Totally unsafe. If you can find anyone foolish enough to do it for you RUN do not walk away from them. Put all such thoughts out of your mind.

Yep, pressures are too high.  Encore is the way to go for something like that.

Well, I guess I'll just have to 'fess up here that I don't know the difference between the Encore and the Contender.  Can somebody give it to me in a nutshell?

The Encore was T/C's answer to the safety issues present with the Contender and to the competition from other SS pistol makers.  It uses a larger and heavier frame, larger diameter barrel, and is chambered in high-pressure cartridges not usable in the Contender/G2 like the .30-06 and .270.

About a pound more steel in the frame of the Encore than the G2. Much larger, more massive and able to take much higher pressures and larger case diameters. In the G2 the pressures developed by the .454 have to be kept to cases about the head size of the .223 but in the Encore it can take them with no problem in cases like the .454 Casull. BUT the short fat and long fat magnums all the rage these days are a NO NO even in the Encore.

Pressure and safety aside----Even if you recut the chamber of the 44 mag barrel, you still don't have a 45 caliber barrel!------ Maybe you could end up with a 444 Marlin, but not a 454!  Gene

I have onethat says ingram on it, 45 mag. yes, I know that full loads are unsafe. more of a collectors barrell, think it was made in the 60's. the guy who had it before me streched a contender frame with it. I assume that most of you fellows know that the original casull was a triplex load. if ya want a 454 casull get an encore(mine shoots great)

Ah, one of the infamous Ingram barrels!  More than one of them "let go" at the lug weld, sending the barrel off down range and leaving the shooter holding the frame.  Collectors' item indeed.

BTW, the .45 Win Mag loaded to factory pressures is not unsafe at all in a Contender.  T/C chambered that cartridge in the Contender in the 1980s, and barrels so chambered were available from the Custom Shop as recently as 2006.

No .454 in a G2, but, a 45-70 will equal its performance with a lot less pressure.
