straight grip 30-30's
« on: December 30, 2006, 07:02:22 PM »
Anyone own or know much about the pre-safety straight grip 30-30's. The Texan & the Marauder are the two I've heard of. Were there more? Descriptions, etc.  ;D Thanks, Byron

My 30-30 336 straight stock was made in 1975. Mine only has 336 as the model number, no T for Texas or short bbl of the Marauder, it's 20 inches. Took me 4 yrs to find the one I wanted, if you have one don't let it go! ;D

Phydaux, I don't have one, but have always liked the trapper models. I've had newer trappers in 45 colt and 44 mag. My current one is a 1894CP in 357mag. Nice gun, handy and light.  ;D Regards, Byron

I've only heard of the 2 you mentioned.
I've a Texan. Best of both worlds if you ask me.

Thanks fellows, The more I research this there seam to be at least 6-7 variations. Mostly short runs. Only three were given names. The Texan, Marauder, and Deluxe Marauder with carving in the stock.

Maybe a marlin expert will see this thread and chime in with more info.  ;D Regards, Byron

This is a Glenfield model 30GT.  I purchased it form the Western Auto store in Lusk, Wyoming back in 1979 for $129.99  Made by Marlin but some unique features:

short 18.5 inch barrel

fore end nose cap with one barrel barrel band

beech stock with impressed acorns and buck's head

It holds it's zero from one year to the next.  Shoots a 3.0 inch group at 150 yards with 150 grain Remington core-lockt ammo. This buck never knew what hit him!

Nope, not for sale.

I had a straight stocked  RC made 1960.  Best wood on any marlin I've ever owned.

Hi guys, I'm a newbe.
I also have a straight grip 336 (no suffix) .30-30 made in 1977.  I contacted Marlin and they were not much help as far as how many were made. The lady seemed to think that they were common,  but I had only seen one other like it. I'm with you guys, I think they are pretty rare. Mine has a 20" barrel and is in excellent condition. It looks like this:

Welcome to Graybeard and to the Marlin Lever Action Centerfire Rifle forum.  There is a lot of experience here on the forum, and perhaps someone can help you with numbers manufactured for your rifle.  Thanks for posting the picture.  It is a great looking gun.

Here is my Marlin 336 RC saddle ring. It has a AA ser# prefix. I don't think straight grip marlins are common, I have only seen a handful over the years.

Note the round back of the lever and the saddle ring, whereas mine has a square back and no saddle ring. I have seen a couple like yours for sale on gunbroker over the last couple of years but don't recall seeing one in person. That is a very nice looking rifle for as old as it is. It should have definite collector value should you ever decide to sell (Heaven forbid!)

It is in Very good shape. The only real problem is some knucklehead put the rear swivel in the Marlin bullseye. I guess that isn't bad as I can replace the bullseye and have no extra holes in the stock. I bought this rifle 3 yrs ago for 130.00 at a gun show. The guy had it priced at 175.00 and no takers. I made my offer and he accepted. It's funny my wife pointed it out to me! It shoots great and for what I paid I will never sell it.
