? on Breech Plugs
« on: December 31, 2006, 04:00:28 PM »
I have a TC omega, I got it used with these then 8 shots fired threw it.

My Question is. How do I go about cleaning the small surfice rust in the 209 hole on my breech plug?

Or am I better off in the long run to just order a new  breech plug ?

From the 209 Primer is there just a single straight to the barrel small hole ..Or is there also Ports on the Powder/Charge side of the breech plug with a few angled holes out of the breech plug?

I can take the breech out and get a few Pics, But not sure how to Post Pics in here, But I could post the url's and then all could just click the url's to view the pics.

I have some Gorilla grease to re-install the breech...

how many use loose powder and do ya try to hunt the Historical way with a powder horn, brass measure and antler with rod as a starter rod?

I would like to see some Powder horns and some neat Muzzle loading items you all built and use.

As I work at a Fur tannery I tan all I harvest, I even have a Turtle front leg on a thick carved stick as a walking stick the neighbor made for me after I tanned them four legs.

I get to tan all from Elephants, girraffes, crocs down to snakes, squirrels and skunks....
I also get to skin alot of black bear from N.Y.,P.A., and V.A. as Locals travel there in VA to hunt bear with hounds and bring them home for me and my cuz to skin.

Here is a Pic of one or two.

Thinking of making some hunting leg chaps from some deer capes I have tanned  just taken up shed space.

Well Have a Safe and Happy New Year all.

Scottie_The_Boy , I would just order a new breech plug. The "flash channel is around 1/8 inch then at the front there is a small opening for the flame to pass through. I prefer loose powder,as it lets you adjust the charge to suite your gun,( some are picky about the powder charge)  ;) Ron

Ron, Thanks alot .... I felt for the price I may as well just buy a new breech Plug, Yet I wasn't sure how bad mine was... I can't see a Pin hole on the front center where the powder is pressed firmly to....

I Didn't know it that first dry fire with just a primer would clean out the hole or just make more trouble for me and the new tool...

Thanks I will play it safe and just Order another breech plug..

New plug and they are easy to find. Same one as the standard Encore.

I find Q-tips work well when dipped in solvent for the 209 primer hole area.  I also hold the plug with a pair of pliers - then run a heavy stream of steamy hot tap water thru the plug for around 30 seconds - then blow it out with my air compressor. Then I use brake cleaner spray thru it - blow that out too. Then I take a sewing needle to make sure the flash hole is clear - put the plug in a sandwich baggie - then hang it from my ramrod tip until it's time to take the ML outdoors. That's when I install it.
Keep that ML smokin'

I suspect that by what I read that you have not even removed the breechplug as yet. If that is the case first remove it and then soak it in some solvent (rusty duck or similar). You may find the breechplug difficult to remove it there is fouling visible in the plug from the rear. That can be another problem. If the plug will not come out you will have to pour some hot soapy water in the bore after plugging the breechplug hole and let is set for a while before dumping it out and trying the plug removal again. The plug is stainless and likely is not destroyed but just fouled.
