How about a 9x57 mm semi-auto?
« on: December 31, 2006, 07:07:16 PM »
Why not re-bore an 8x57 mm surplus Hakim semi-auto to  .358", chamber for 9x57mm (aka .358"x57mm) , shorten the barrel to 20" and mount a scout scope for a short, if heavy,  .35 caliber sporting semi-auto.

Does anyone have any  thoughts about this?

358x57.  I think it is a great idea. Make that old worn 8mm bore brand new and turn it into a larger bore. Various 358 bore rifles get lots of praise for their performance. The project may cost a little more than a new barrel but I am not sure.

If you are doing it because you want one, that is one thing but from an economic standpoint, I think you could probably buy a new Remington 750 in 35 Whelen for what you will wind up having invested in this rifle.  But I must admit I have done more than one gun project not on the economics of it but because I wanted something specific.

You're absolutley right Leo. From an economic point of view, this project makes no sense. Better to go with a Remington 750.

It might be difficult to get a rebored semi-auto working reliably. It takes a lot of work to to balance pressure pulse, weight of moving parts, resistance of springs, etc. However, for old bolt guns, it sounds good.

Good points all Toy.  I  thought about it but I frankly didn't think it would be that much difference.  I guess there is a natural tendency to brush aside  things we don't really know much about, like the considerations you mentioned.

I have read of M-1 Garands that were re-barreled to shoot the .35 Whelen, but who knows what they had to do to make them function?
