Match barrels for SKS? Mini-14?
« on: January 01, 2007, 01:39:18 PM »
Is there any such thing as "match" barrels, preferrably stainless steel, for SKS rifles?

Can anyone recommend a good gunsmith for custom, accurizing work on Mini-14 & SKS rifles?

Neither one are known as tack drivers as is and I have heard of gunsmiths that specialize in mini 14 accurizing but not of the sks. Not sure if it would be worth what it would cost for a sks though it may for a mini 14.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Please don't take this the wrong way.  My experience with a Mini-14 I once owned and sold and that of many other shooters I have spoken with is the same, they are not good shooters.  For what they sell for plus the cost of any questionable accuracy work you are in the price range of a decent AR rifle which will shoot much better out of the box.  I like Ruger products and own several, why Ruger did not work on better accuracy from this rifle or offer an accurized model as an upgrade is beyond me.  Good luck

Funny you should mention that.  I read recenetly Petersens' Rifle Shooter that Ruger had improved the accuracy of the Ranch Rifle by thightening tolerances and making other improvements.   Alot of other people felt the same way you did, apparently.

I restocked my .223 ranch rifle with a good kevlar stock, have a good scope on it.  It shoots much better, not match grade but 1.5-2 in @ 100yd.  and the first shot is usually right on.  I guess the thin barrell heats up.  That is usually all the shots I get at coyotes,

also I did the same for my SKS, Kevlar $40 stock.  It also shrunk the groups by 1/2, now around 2in. and again the first shot is right on.  I have no complaints with either gun, they are what they are.  I bought both years ago and have about $300 in it for both.  excluding stocks and scopes.

And the better ammo you use the accuraccy gets better.  I still shoot cheap russian most of the time except when I deer hunt with SKS.  You do not want to use those russian 123 hollow points on deer, but the Winchester .762x39 performs well
