OK you guys got me
« on: January 01, 2007, 02:10:00 PM »
I have never owned a handi but I love Single shot rifles. I  primarily hunt Deer bear Moose (if I draw a tag) and Coyote My question is this:
What do I buy? These thing come in so many shapes and sizes that it is hard to pick. Within this little group of gun nuts Iam sure I will be steered into the right  direction
, if god didnt want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?

A .45-70 would be perfect.  Welcome aboard!

No different than any other rifle purchase (except cost). Pick the caliber(s) you like and go for it. I have an Ultra Varmint in .223. Comes with a little nicer furniture, a bull barrel,  and a weaver rail. My son has a basic handi rifle in 30-30 w/ irons. Both shoot well. Sounds like you need two or three if you hunt everything you mentioned. Maybe 30-06 and .223 or .308 and .223. Just one gun seems either heavy for the coyote end or light for the moose end.

For a true Handiholic, that would require several calibers, after all, you can't have just one!! ;D If you just want to limited yourself to one, which I find hard to believe ::), a .280 or a 30-06 would be my first picks, although everyone should have at least one .45-70 too!!! ;D Then it's just a matter of figuring out if you want synthetic, wood or in the case of the '06, the resin laminated stock.

Iam considering a 280. I have had many in the past. What kind of velocity can you get from a 26 inch barrel? I was also leaning towards a 35 Whelen I have had a few of these as well My latest was in a I dare say an Encore. MY only concern with this is overall lenght. I am built like a gorilla long arms short legs etc.

My .280 is 41½" long,  Digger gets 2975fps with the 150gr Rem Core-lokt factory ammo. The 35 Whelen 22" barrel shoots the 225gr TSX at a little over 2800fps with a near max load of Rl15, in the limited edition 26" RMEF barrel, the same load does 2895fps.

I would assume the 26 inch 35 is next to impossible to find

I live in Alaska, and do it all with a 30-06 Handi.  Nuff said.

Yes, I do own and carry other rifles, but it seems they are always getting left behind, broken, damaged, or misplaced.  I end up using the trusty old reliable, indistructiable, Handi.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yes, they're a little hard to find. Handi35 had one for sale on one of the auction sites for a while, he may still have it available.
