Stupidity killed him
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:20:23 PM »
Just heard of a hunting accident in NW WI. A guy 69 was found dead at the base of his tree stand. He was hunting with some family (when he did not come out of the woods they went and looked for him) and evidently had lowered his xbow to the ground butt first with a arrow still in the xbow. The butt hit the ground and discharged the arrow and it hit him in near the butt in his leg cutting the femoral artery. Needless to say he bleed out before help could arrive. I had heard he tried to put a tourniquet on his leg but the wound was up too high for it to work. The xbow was found with the drop rope still attached to it. What a sad way to go.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

UPDATE: They did an autopsy as they knew the guy had a bad heart. Coroner said he was having a heart attack at the time. What they figure happend was he started having chest pains got excited and lowered the xbow in a hurry to get out of his stand and I suppose try to get help. Sad part is maybe or maybe not he may have survived the heart issue adding the arrow wound was just too much as that killed him for sure. Too bad but I can see this happening under the circumstances as if your haveing a heart attack I am sure your not thinking straight at the time. Jim

If you get in trouble, shoot the arrow into the dirt; you can always buy another arrow ...

Lowering ANY weapon muzzle-up is obviously not wise but, once again, a little more information makes a world of difference.   After having a (fatal) heart attack last May, I can assure everyone that it does much to cloud your  judgement at the time.  (I flat-lined and was "shocked" back to life three times before they could get me to the hospital and get a large stent in.  Have only 30% heart function now but I thank God, it sure beats the alternative!)
Common sense is an uncommon virtue
