308 in Encore

What is the shortest you can go and still get good accuracy with the 308 Winchester in the Encore?  Would maga port take care of recoil in a shorter barrel?

All of this depends on what you call "short" and what recoil level you can take.  I have 15" 308 factory tapered barrel with no brake and routinely shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yrds.  The recoil is no worse than a 44 mag in a revolver.

Not sure how short you want but I really would much shorter then 15".  If the barrel is shorter than that you would be better off with a different round.

I would recommend 15" in an Encore pistol barrel.

Good question!

I have several Contender barrels, all of which are 10 inch.  Perfect length, as far as I'm concerned.  It fits in my day pack real nice.

I recently aquired a 15" Encore in 308.  I had pretty much made up my mind to cut it to 12 inches but have since decided I will shoot it first.  If it handles OK, I will leave it as is.

I too would like to hear from anyone that has a 308 in shorter than a 15 inch barrel.

I have a 6.5x55 in a 12 inch encore and it is compact, carryable and very accurate, the perfect length for me.

If you do not have an concealed weapons permit putting a handgun in your back pack  could be a real problem for you if you should be stopped by a DNR officer

Check your state, county, town, and local laws before you continue with this practice.

I like to carry my 10 inch Contender rigs in my small back pack also---and my 15 inch 308 Encore is too big, so I carry it in a bandolier type holster from Uncle Mike's---but it is often "concealed" by my rain coat or some such. If the DNR guys want to get me for this, I am "had"! Wisconsin does not have a carry law anyway----because our governor vetoed it two years in a row and was still reelected in November.---I will vote with my feet soon. Gene

You guys and gals can do as you want, But for me it is not worth loosing my hunting privileges and freedom just because I had my handgun  under my coat or in a back pack. Maryland is almost imposable to get a CCW permit  for any reason! I do vote for our sport

My handguns are for hunting I spend a lot of money on them and take care of them as well as I can. But they are for hunting and I am not scared to take them out in the rain or snow it is part of our sport. I always wipe them down and give them a coat of eezox when I get back in. When I am out in the woods I am in hunting mode and my handgun is loaded as soon as I walk away from the truck and it is in my hand or sling over my shoulder so I can take a shot

Concealed Carry is allowed in Alaska, without a permit.

You don't need license to carry any handgun if you are going to or from a sporting event where the handgun was used, or if you are engaged in hunting.....Glad I live down here instead of other States....

I hunt with a 15" 308 win Encore Handgun and would not dream of mag n porting or installing a muzzle break as I don't think the recoil is as bad as my 44 mag with full house loads. And with a 2.5X8 on it It will shoot better groups at 100 yards than some rifles.
