Plantinum Powerbelt Results??
« on: January 03, 2007, 03:37:58 AM »
Ok, huntin season is almost over. Did anyone actually take game with a platinum powerbelt?

How did they perform compared to the old "fall-apart" series? As you can tell I am not a fan of regular powerbelts, BUT they are EASY to load and am interested to see how the new ones perform.

My buddy bought the 270 gr. Platinum power belts and took a nice size doe with a broad side shot. The exit hole was about 1 1/2 time the size of the entrance hole. We did not find any fragmentation or evidence of any. Other than that I have not heard or seen any results.
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

2 for 2 for me this year.
1st was a nice 8 pointer, straight on shot at about 60 yards.  Hit bone and bullet turned into about a 2 inch flat pancake.  Recovered it flat against a rib on far side.  2nd was a good sized doe.  about 80-90 yards, slightly quartering away.  Hit a couple of inches too far back.  Bullet ended up against milk sack, so all soft tissue.  70% weight retention adn approximately doubled in diameter.  Worked well for me.  Be advised that whatever the outer coating is, it is not very thick.  I didn't look at it very closely, but it looks like it is an electroplated coating on a copper jacket.  I'll look at it closer tomorrow.

See my post "SST vs Powerbelt."

I chose 338 gr Platinums over 130 grains of Pyrodex.  Took two deer in Illinois, a large 9-point at 150 yards and doe at a distance more easily measured in feet.

The shot on the buck entered behind the front shoulder and exited the far shoulder.  There was a nice blood trail for what distance he ran.

The shot on the doe was through the two shoulders and she managed to run 30 yards, the blood trail was quite graphic.

I honestly didn't inspect the exit holes to see what kind of diameter they were.  I was pretty impressed with this load and will continue to use it in my inline.  Sighted 2-3" high at 100 and was about dead-on at 150.  I have not used the old bullets in the lighter weights, but I think you'll be OK if you stick with the heavier bullet weights.

Hit bone and bullet turned into about a 2 inch flat pancake.  Recovered it flat against a rib on far side.

This sounds just like the old powerboobs!  Completely flatenning out and not passing through.

Thanks for the responses guys, anymore?  I am thinking about trying them once again, but am extremely leary after my first encounter with them.

Seen two taken with them this year. Both were pass through. Exit wound was not measured but looked like a 12ga slug 1.5 to 2" to me.

keep your powder dry !!!

sorry.  didn't even think about keeping that one at the time.  I thought about it the next day, but had thrown it in the woods.  I'll see if I can get a pic of the one from the doe posted this weekend.  It's at work, where I measured the weight retention in the lab.

Yeah the one from the doe is also pretty flat, but does have a little of a mushroom shape...with the stem mostly cutoff.
